Position Description
• Under the general direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, plans, organizes and directs the daily operations for continuous, coordinated and comprehensive care of acute care patients and the daily operations of the Emergency Department in accordance with accreditation standards, federal, state and local regulations. Communicates and interacts with members of the medical staff, other departments and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality.
Essential Position Responsibilities
• The essential position responsibilities are the basis for the 90 day and annual evaluation. This list is intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed and not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties required of personnel.
1. Supervises and provides, when needed, direct and indirect patient care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Consults with personnel, physicians, and CNO on nursing problems and interpretation of organizational policies to ensure patient needs are met. Continually seeks ways to improve patient care as well as individual and departmental efficiency and effectiveness.
2. Responds to suggestions and complaints and communicates issue resolutions to appropriate personnel.
3. Seeks job related education, attends required training and 80% of appropriate programs.
4. Reviews and revises, as necessary, departmental policies and protocols in conjunction with the CNO.
5. Utilizes the nursing process and the physician’s orders to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing standards and/or established policy and procedure.
6. Establishes both short and long term goals to meet department needs. Shows foresight in recognizing problems. Adheres to schedules and plan. Makes recommendation to Administration for and assists in the development of new programs and research for special projects, space and other resources.
7. Prepares departmental annual operating budget and capital equipment budget. Operates departmental expenditures within approved budget. Makes sound decisions that consider cost vs. benefit. Shows innovation in reducing expenses. Utilizes equipment and materials in a cost effective manner.
8. Recommends a sufficient number of qualified and competent personnel. Selects, trains and develops personnel. Serves as a preceptor in orienting and/or training new personnel. Gives prompt and constructive feedback. Evaluates the competence and performance of personnel on measurable results. Use fair and consistent methods to counsel and progressively discipline through the corrective action process. Manages and motivates personnel in meeting and exceeding standards of performance. Reviews and approves departmental hours to be paid and provides justification for bi-weekly report.
9. Ensure departmental compliance with all governing bodies. Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures. Shows creativity in improving department performance and in resolving and preventing problems. Initiates change if necessary and takes quick action.
10. Attends organizational and departmental orientation upon employment and completes annual update and health requirements thereafter in accordance with timeframes specified by organizational policy. Completes required competencies, licensure, certification, and registration recertification in a timely manner, as well as participates in continuing education.
11. Demonstrates a working knowledge of and/or location of organizational policies and procedures as well as adheres to them. Exhibits a working knowledge of information management, confidentiality, patient safety, corporate compliance, and infection control. Arrives to work on time, on scheduled days, during scheduled hours. Maintains flexibility with work schedule and is willing to help at all times and in all areas to meet the needs of the department/organization.
12. Possesses knowledge of reporting errors or near misses without fear or blame/punishment for reporting accidents/incidents. Addresses and reports problems as they arise.
13. Provides age specific care demonstrating knowledge of growth and development, system assessment and developing an interdisciplinary plan of care addressing culture, religion, and ethnic preferences. Adheres to legal implications of patient care including working within the scope of practice.
14. Attends 75% of department director meetings, in-services and other meetings of which position is an active member (i.e. PI, Infection Control, etc). Communicates information to personnel that will affect them from these meetings as well as departmental meetings and information received via organizational email to share, etc.)
15. Participates in performance improvement activities.
16. Follows chain of command whenever issue or problems arise which are beyond the scope of practice. Communicates relevant and appropriate information through chain of command.
17. Performs essential job functions in an acceptable quantity and quality. Produces required volume of work. Maintains attention to work and meets deadlines.

Qualifications
Minimal Qualifications
• Education:
o Graduation from an accredited school of registered nursing
o Current RN license from Georgia Board of Nursing
o Current BCLS certification
o Obtain ACLS certification within 6 months of hire and maintain current certification
o Obtain PALS certification within 6 months of hire and maintain current certification
o TNCC recommended
• Experience:
o Minimum of 5 year Emergency Department experience required.
o Minimum of 1 year supervisory experience preferred.
o Ability to proficiently perform all essential job responsibilities.
Physical/Mental Demands
• Ability to think and work effectively under stress with frequent interruptions; to move, sit, stand, walk, and bend intermittently throughout the work day. Lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
• Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable the applicant to adequately fulfill the requirements of this position.
• Use of mechanical and technical equipment required for the responsibilities assigned.

Occupational Exposure to Blood borne Pathogens
• Category I – Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
Orientation Period
• Up to 90 days to perform proficiently all essential position responsibilities. The first ninety (90) days this position is assumed is considered the probationary/introductory period, for which the employee is subject to continuous review.
