Evansville Surgery Center is looking for a Charge Nurse to join our team. This position is responsible for the Pre-Op & PACU of our outpatient surgery center.
JOB SUMMARY: To supervise and direct nursing care and all related activities according to the polices, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the Evansville Surgery Center, and the department. Includes responsibility for all aspects of environmental control, staff personnel, assistance to physicians, materials and equipment, and education of personnel.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise and direct nursing care given to patients.
- May delegate responsibilities and duties to personnel, both professional and non-professional.
- Serve as a resource person for clinical staff.
- Ensure availability of all personnel, supplies and equipment required.
- Make all daily assignments for clinical staff supervised, including staffing assignments, cleaning assignments, and any special assignments.
- Ensure appropriate use of human resources.
- Re-allocate staffing based on the needs of the center.
- Adjust daily staff arrival and departure times to accommodate changes in the surgery schedule.
- Collaborates with other Charge Nurses to ensure adequate and appropriate staffing for all areas.
- Authorize time changes for staff.
- Maintains low census hours for clinical staff, and allocates as needed per center policy.
- Approves clinical staff vacation requests per center policy.
- Sign and approve time sheets and/or time clock entries for supervised staff.
- Designate nurse to be in charge of clinical area when Charge Nurse is absent.
- Completes performance appraisals of clinical personnel. Performs chart audits as needed for performance appraisals.
- Assists in counseling employees as needed, and make recommendations for promotions, transfers, terminations, etc.
- Report changes of any type to the Clinical Director and/or Facility Administrator.
- Serves as a resource person for clinical staff and other departments/areas, i.e. materials management, surgery scheduling, human resources, etc.
- In the absence of the Clinical Director, responsible for day-to-day operations of the center.
- Ensure communication between departments to promote continuity of patient care.
- Participate in obtaining qualified personnel for the specific department. Interviews candidates and makes recommendations regarding hiring new employees.
- Apply policies and procedures of the Evansville Surgery Center to ensure consistent quality of nursing care.
- Supervise the cleanliness and care of equipment and supplies to ensure good working condition.
- Responsible for the control of inventories used in the area supervised.
- Assist in the evaluation of the need for new or different supplies, instrumentation, or equipment.
- Participate on various committees as designated.
- Assist in formulating, reviewing, and revising policies and procedures as necessary.
- Observe staff in daily duties with regard to practices, procedures, and identify areas for improvement.
- Participate in, and comply, with the Performance Improvement Program.
- Maintains clinical skills by working in assigned area as needed.
- Coordinates services with outside entities as necessary, i.e. Deaconess Hospital pharmacy, radiology, pharmacy, etc.
- Completes annual mandatory inservices. Maintains confidential passwords for computer learning. Takes responsibility for completion of learning assignments on time.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Graduate of an accredited school or nursing. Two (2) years related experience preferred. Demonstrated ability to function in managerial position.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION: Current Indiana Nursing License. Current CPR and ACLS certification.
