    Central Attendance District Instrumental Music Position

    Position Title: Music Director – Grades 5-8 (other assisting as schedule allows)

    SUMMARY: The EVSC is seeking an accomplished teacher for 5-8 grade music classes within the Central Attendance District Responsibilities include beginning 5th grade through advanced 8th grade instrumental instruction while assisting in other portions of the Central High School program. The qualified candidate should demonstrate a high level of performance on their primary instrument, as well as strong knowledge of band/string pedagogy, curriculum and literature. He/she will be responsible for starting instrumental students, leading and conducting multi-level ensembles, and preparing students for competitions and performances. This position works in collaboration with other district music teachers and staff.

The band department has a well-established and strong reputation throughout the state, and strives to provide students at all levels with high-quality instruction and excellence-driven performance experiences.

    The EVSC is the third largest school district in Indiana with an enrollment of almost 23,000 students. The district covers 241 square miles and comprises urban, suburban and rural areas. The EVSC has 39 schools (21 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 6 high schools). In addition, EVSC has 5 specialty schools, including six specialized programs, and many early childhood learning centers. The EVSC has the largest transportation system, the largest food service system, and is the fourth largest employer in Southwestern Indiana.

    Located along the Ohio River, the city of Evansville and Vanderburgh County have an estimated population in excess of 180,000. Evansville is home to a wide variety of cultural and entertainment amenities, including The Ford Center; Victory Theatre; Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden; Bosse Field (the third-oldest ballpark in regular use in the nation); Koch Family Children’s Museum of Evansville (cMoe); Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science, and much more. Evansville is also home to the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. Over its 82 year history, the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra has grown to become one of the finest regional orchestras of its kind in the country, reaching thousands of audience members young and old. The Orchestra offers a Classics and Pops series to critical acclaim, as well as the ever-popular Young People’s Concerts for grades 3 to 5 and Lollipop concerts for pre-school and kindergarten-age children. The orchestra provides many performance opportunities for our local musicians, and draws talented performers from the tri-state area and beyond.

    PRIMARY DUTIES:

    • Responsible for developing a healthy instrumental program within the Central High School district.
    • Responsible for teaching all instruments at the 5th-8th grade levels.
    • Collaborate with the Central High School district instrumental staff throughout the full lifecycle of its program - from recruiting beginning students to preparing high school students for advanced level performance.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

    • Teaches corporation-approved curriculum while creating a classroom and total school environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
    • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and develops and informs students of reasonable rules concerning classroom procedures and behavior and maintains a safe and orderly classroom environment.
    • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and times designated.
    • Employs a variety of instructional techniques, instructional media, and performance assessments, which guide the learning process toward academic achievement and curriculum goals.
    • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates these objectives to the students.
    • Assesses the accomplishments of students in a variety of ways on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
    • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, corporation policy, and administrative regulations.
    • Administers standardized testing as directed by the EVSC and analyzes standardized testing data and adjusts instructional strategies, as needed, to maximize probability of student success.
    • Plans and coordinates the work of paraprofessionals, parents, and volunteers (e.g., college students) in the classroom and on field trips.
    • Recognizes the special needs of students with learning disabilities, seeks the assistance of corporation specialists, as needed and/or required, and makes appropriate individualized physical and instructional accommodations within the classroom.
    • Available to serve on building-level and corporation-wide committees, e.g., textbook adoption, curriculum writing, test analysis, etc.
    • Builds effective relationships with parents and students through regular communication and is available outside the instructional day to students and parents for education-related purposes, e.g., open house, conferences, extra-curricular activities, etc.
    • Participate in professional growth and development through continuing education, educational seminars, workshops, conferences, membership in professional organizations of the subjects taught, and attendance at corporation-sponsored in-services.
    • Directs, attends, and manages all facets of instrumental concerts, festivals, and solo/ensemble. (After school, evening, and weekend hours will be necessary.)
    • Maintains an accurate inventory of instrumental assets as they pertain to the assigned classrooms.
    • Schedules all rehearsals and performances in coordination with building administrators.
    • Regularly adheres to EVSC and school policies, procedures, and rules.
    • Maintains a strong, regular personal attendance record.
    • Completes all other duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Supervises students, student aides, paraprofessionals, and parent volunteers.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

    Bachelor’s degree.

    Experience in instrumental pedagogy and directing required.

    Technological skills required. (curricular software, electronic grade book, etc.)

    Piano keyboard skills are strongly recommended.

    Should possess a vision for excellence in performing arts at the middle/high school level and a strong desire to achieve success.

    Must be skilled to provide instrumental instruction, run an effective performing and recruiting program, and be flexible to work with other artists.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

    Valid Indiana teaching certificate in appropriate grade level and area of study required.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, teachers, school board members, and the general public.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability, and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to prepare, project, monitor and document funds from multiple sources.

    REASONING ABILITY:

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of School Trustees policies.
