Director of Health and Fitness

Job Summary

The Director of Health & Fitness is responsible for overseeing all operations within the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC Fitness Department, located in a state-of-the-art facility that opened in 2023. The center features four fitness studios offering over 70 weekly group exercise classes and serves a membership of more than 8,000 individuals. Key responsibilities include developing innovative programs, managing personal training, group exercise, and mind-body classes, leading marketing initiatives, and ensuring exceptional member services, including onboarding and fitness center member childcare.

Qualifications and Skills

Program Development and Growth:

• Develop and implement innovative strategies to expand the Fitness Department, including specialized fitness programs, wellness and nutrition initiatives, special events, and collaborative programs with other JCC departments and Community Partners.
• Foster a dynamic and cutting-edge fitness environment that appeals to diverse demographics and incorporates the latest industry trends.

Staff Management:

• Recruit, train, and supervise personal trainers, group exercise instructors, and kidcare counselors, ensuring high-quality work and excellent member service.
• Provide direct supervision to the Fitness and Recreation Operations Manager and Group Exercise Coordinator and personal trainer team.
• Conduct departmental meetings and facilitate ongoing training sessions.

Class and Program Oversight:

• Create and manage group exercise and mind/body class schedules, including fee-based programs like Pilates Reformer.
• Monitor class quality and participation to ensure member satisfaction.

Member Retention & Satisfaction:

• Work closely with the Member Services Department to develop an effective onboarding system for new members.
• Conduct facility tours, personally contact potential and new Health and Fitness members, and implement strategies for member growth and retention.

Direct Member Services:

• Provide equipment orientations, conduct fitness evaluations, and teach group classes or personal training sessions (5 hours weekly as part of the 40-hour workweek).
• Maintain a visible and engaging presence on the fitness floor, fostering member interaction and support.

Administrative Tasks and Coordination:

• Manage the department's annual budget, including monthly projections and reporting to the Chief Wellness Officer.
• Control payroll and ensure training sessions are appropriately scheduled and revenue aligns with budget targets.

Administrative Responsibilities

Communication and Marketing:

• Create clear communication channels for members regarding programs, events, operational changes, and service disruptions.
• Promote programs through JCC channels, the website, social media, and community outreach.

Reporting:

• Provide monthly membership statistics and updates on growth and retention strategies to the Chief Wellness Officer.

Department Expectations

• Serve as a role model for health and wellness, maintaining a visible and positive presence in the Fitness Center.
• Lead fitness-related events, such as open houses and member appreciation events.
• Maintain a professional appearance in J-branded attire.

Qualifications

• 3-5 years of experience in facility management within the fitness, aquatics, or related industries.
• Bachelor’s degree in a fitness-related field or an active Personal Training Certification from an NCCA-accredited organization (e.g., ACE, ACSM, NASM) preferred.
• Experience creating and instructing fitness classes for diverse demographics, including adults, children, and individuals with special needs.
• Operational knowledge of resistance, functional, and cardiovascular training equipment.

Specifications

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
• Ability to lift and move objects up to 60 lbs.
• Proven experience in team management, program development, and customer service excellence.
