What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field Crew position at Even Pull Farm?
Even Pull Farm is a 4.5 acre intensive, highly diversified farm producing vegetables and cut flowers in Yamhill County, Oregon. We are entering our 11th season of operations. We sell primarily to restaurants in Yamhill County (including two James Beard nominated chefs!), through a year-round retail cooler at a business in McMinnville, to our Farm Club subscription members, and through a local florist Bucket Run. We are proud to be a local-first farm, focusing on serving our closest community year-round. We take a lot of inspiration from our chef clients, and work hard to be an extension of their kitchens by maintaining extremely high quality standards, consistent availability, and a fun diversity of product.
While our ideal candidate is looking for Full Time, if you are interested in Part Time work please go ahead and submit your application! If we are unable to fill the full-time position we will pivot to hiring a couple of part time positions. If you are applying for Part Time, please indicate that on your application, and note our response may be a bit delayed. Thank you!
JOB DESCRIPTION
- This is a short term position, beginning in April & ending in late November
- Position is full time, 32-40 hours a week, 4-5 days a week, hours will scale up and down slightly at the start and end of the season when there is less work on the farm
- There will be seasonal variation in our work day, but we typically start at 8am (shifting to 7am in summer); end times will adjust based on starting time, but we generally work 8 hour days
- $16/hour starting hourly pay, raises possible based on experience & performance
- 5% of gross income as an employer match through the Oregon Saves retirement savings plan
- Annual gear cost reimbursement of up to $100
- Farmer veggies galore
This position will encompass all farm tasks. You will harvest, wash veggies, pack Farm Club boxes, plant, weed, trellis, seed in the greenhouse, do field clean up, and help with just about every aspect of farm operations over the course of the season. We tend to figure out and stick to a regular weekly schedule so you will know what to expect when you come to work each day (ie: harvesting Monday & Wednesday, seeding on Tuesday, planting Thursday, etc).
This is a great role for someone looking to build a skill base in small scale intensive veggie production. We have strong production systems in place, a myriad of excellent tools at our disposal, and are constantly working to improve efficiency and efficacy in our methods. Our management team is there on the ground every day to answer questions, teach methods, and share tips and tricks: we hope you’ll take advantage of all of that to build your skills and knowledge!
Duties include:
Harvest. We usually harvest 2-3 days a week. It is a large percentage of the work on our farm, and you will spend a lot of time picking, washing, and packing beautiful veggies for sale! Harvest includes all of the associated tasks: wash station cleaning & prep, harvesting of vegetables using sharp knives, washing & packing vegetables to order, maintaining quality and food safety standards, and cleaning up at the end of the day.
Field work. In addition to harvest, you will be involved in the wide range of other farming tasks that happen week to week. This includes planting, crop maintenance (trellising, weeding etc), and other field chores like spreading compost or pulling old crops.
Other duties. There are some regular chores we will do weekly, including filling seed trays and washing totes/bins.
Qualifications:
- Our ideal candidate will have farming experience or experience with physical labor, competitive athletics, or in a restaurant kitchen. Farming is physical work and requires the ability to repeatedly bend and lift 40-50# safely off the ground, and to be on your feet all day. You will often be sore/tired and hot/cold depending on the season. Being ok with this discomfort and maintaining a good attitude is essential.
- Attention to detail, ability to take direction, asking questions when you are unsure about something, and being receptive to feedback are required qualities for this position. Farm work is a skill and it takes time to master each task; approaching the work with a learning mindset and an intention toward improvement will get you far.
- There is a lot of precision and repetition in farm work. You need to be able to stay focused and engaged while doing the same task for a period of time.
- An overall ability to focus and work with a sense of urgency is key as our lists are long and the days are short. We try to make the most of our time so we can leave at the end of the day feeling accomplished and knowing we set ourselves up for success the next day.
- Being game for any task and able to have a sense of humor when things are hard will make you successful on the farm. Bring your hustle, focus & enthusiasm with you!
- You must have reliable transportation to and from the farm.
