ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION SPECIALIST
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A. Credential
Valid California Adapted Physical Education Credential
B. Education
Sufficient to meet credential requirements
C. Experience
Experience in Developmental/Remedial Physical Education with pupils enrolled in Special Education is preferred.
D. Personal
Ability to meet District standards of physical and mental health, professional attitude and leadership ability.

Knowledge of and ability to implement the subject matter, philosophical, social, and physical concepts relative to the duties and responsibilities listed on this job description.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Subject Area
1. Provides adapted physical education activities for pupils identified with special needs.
a.Program includes identification and assessment of physical and perceptual needs.
b.Develop goals and objectives for IEPs.
c.Implement goals and objectives in cooperation with staff and parents.
d.Consults with classroom teachers and specialists in the development of a physical education program.
e.Provides ongoing training and inservicing to teachers.
2. Evaluation/Record Keeping
a.Maintains required records and reports.
b.Assists with admission and dismissal procedures.
c.Serves as a member of the IEP team and conferences with parents.
3. Instructional Techniques
a.Provides innovative, creative and adapted physical education for special education students.
b.Adapts, develops, and uses materials needed for different learning styles or modalities of individual students.
c.Establishes and maintains student behavior needed to create a good self-image and positive attitude as well as encouraging responsibility for students’ own learning.
d.Provides individual or group instruction designed to meet individual needs.
B. Relationships
1. Teacher-Student
a.Establishes a positive teacher-student rapport by maintaining a responsive environment for learning.
b.Develops consistent positive behavior management and working arrangement with students to develop good self-image.
2. Teacher-Staff
a.Shares in the sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees.
b.Cooperates with other staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
c.Works collaboratively with school nurses, general physical education teachers and support staff such as occupational and physical therapists.
d.May work with other staff members in planning and coordinating work of aides and other paraprofessionals.
3. Teacher-Parent
a.Communicates with parents through a variety of methods or means in order to develop a positive reinforcement of interest in students’ progress.
4. Teacher-Community
a.Imparts District philosophy as need arises.
b.Presents a positive teacher image to the community through school activities.

a.Maintains professional competence through participation in inservice education actibities provided by the District and self-selected professional growth activities.

a.Responsible for basic attendance accounting and other services as required.
