This is a Leave Replacement (one year only) Position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Teacher-Librarian collaborates with teaching staff in the development of literacy through the administration of the library information and technology program. Teacher-Librarians provide specialized instruction to students and teaching staff and manage the selection, organization, utilization, and maintenance of resources. The mission of the library information and technology program is to enhance teaching and learning and ensure that students are effective users and producers of ideas and information. It is also to develop life-long readers by promoting and providing a variety of print and digital resources. Teacher-Librarians report to the principal. They coordinate the school’s information and technology program with the district curriculum/assessment managers and specialists, the Education Technology, and the Information Technology departments.

 
Information and Technology Teacher

  • Assist staff and students with strategies for intellectual access to information and ideas for learning (locating, evaluating, and using information) that they can use within and beyond school settings.
  • Provide leadership in achieving the building and district technology vision.
  • Teach essential information and technology skills to ensure that students and staff are effective users and producers of information and ideas.
  • Design and teach lessons based on district library standards.
  • Teach, train, and facilitate the first level of support to all staff and students for technological needs.
  • Teach students and staff to be safe, ethical and responsible digital citizens.
  • Provide leadership in achieving the building and district technology vision.
  • Coach instructional staff in support of curriculum and information management.
  • Promote and teach students and staff to use emerging learning technologies.
  • Support school staff and students in the use of Content Management Systems and Learning Management Systems.
  • Promote the implementation of technology

Reading Advocate

  • Provide intellectual access to information through lessons that are integrated into the curriculum and that help students achieve information literacy by developing effective cognitive strategies.
  • Support and reinforce strategy-based reading instruction with a variety of formats and genres.
  • Promote student and staff reading for information and pleasure.
  • Promote and maintain a ubiquitous reading culture.
  • Provide community access and outreach opportunities.

Program Administrator

  • Provide open and equitable access to resources, technology and information services for the entire school community.
  • Support the distribution, tracking and collection of individual district issued student devices.
  • Create and implement procedures for library operations including, but not limited to: planning and evaluation, budgeting, access, student and teacher use, instruction, services, facilities, and collection development (selection, acquisition, cataloging, processing, inventory, weeding).
  • Develop and maintain a diversified library collection of print, non-print, and electronic resources to support curricular needs, the development of student literacy, and the interests of the students, using up-to-date review sources and selection practices.
  • Assist in the selection, assignment and supervision of classified library staff, volunteers, and student assistants.
  • Maintain systems for circulation of materials.

Leader/Collaborator

  • Solicit staff input regarding resource selection, library access, and schedule.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers in the preparation, presentation and evaluation of units or assignments that utilize information resources.
  • Assist faculty (staff) in the integration of technology into curriculum and instruction.
  • Provide leadership, instruction and consulting assistance in the use of literature, leading edge instruction and information technology.
  • Model instructional strategies and coach staff members in the integration of information literacy strategies and technology with curriculum
  • Participate as a learner and teacher in school and district meetings, in-service and committees.
  • Work with other Teacher-Librarians, and district curriculum and technical staff to coordinate library and information technology programs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Elementary and Middle School Level

  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Library Media endorsement or Elementary Education endorsement and preferred Library Media or enrolled in a program within one year and completed within five years of accepting the position.*
  • Classroom teaching competence in multi-curricular areas.

* May be waived for itinerant positions.

 

High School Level

  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Library Media endorsement.
  • Classroom teaching competence in multi-curricular areas.

 

All Levels

  • Knowledge of and experience with organizing and managing a library collection.
  • Knowledge of and experience with an automated circulation system.
  • Knowledge of and experience with instructional technology in the delivery of curriculum.
  • Experience with planning and working with staff in implementing integrated curriculum and student use of technologies.
  • Ability to select, order and process new resources.
  • Ability to assist students with media selection appropriate to their needs, interests and abilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive and safe environment for learning.
  • Ability to supervise and direct the work of classified library staff, student aides and library volunteers.
  • Ability to value and provide for individual and cultural differences.
  • Must possess technology skills and leadership to include knowledge of computers and related equipment, software applications, and the effective use of technology
  • Master's degree desired.
  • Preferred experience in working with children and families who are culturally, linguistically and racially diverse.
  • Preferred training and/or experience; or willingness to take course work to increase knowledge and use of best instructional practices.
