The Facilities Mechanic is responsible for the repairs and maintenance of all HRT facilities. Performs work to provide effective operation, functionality, appearance, and cleanliness of facilities, including installation and relocation of HRT facilities and facilities-related equipment.

With minor supervision, the mechanic will work independently to perform the following tasks :
- Performs skilled and unskilled tasks with little or no assistance or supervision.
- Provides supervision of service contractors as directed.
- Assists in troubleshooting electrical, heating and ventilation, hydraulic, and lighting systems.
- Participates in appropriate formal and On-The-Job (OJT) training.
- Appropriately selects tools and equipment needed to do a job and manages time to complete tasks efficiently.
- Installs equipment according to specifications.
- Performs preventive maintenance of hydraulic, electrical, lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
- Inspects properties, equipment, and chemical storage to ensure environmental compliance.
- Makes repairs to the interior and exterior of buildings such as walls, floors, lights, roofs, landscaping, sidewalks, fences, and pavement.
- Performs minor renovation tasks such as door installation, framing (metal and wood), drywall installation / finishing, and painting.
- Installs, relocates, or removes replacement equipment and office furniture as directed.
- Responsible for storm preparations and clean-up, including snow removal, downed trees, trash, etc.
- Assists in setting up for various meetings and special events.
- Uses a striping machine to paint parking lot stripes.
- Picks up litter at HRT facilities.
- Collects and empties trash and recycling bins into main recycling containers.
- Participates in appropriate formal and On-The-Job (OJT) training.
- Manages records created and received in compliance with the Hampton Roads Transit Records Management Policy and Procedures.
- Responsible for coordinating the records management effort within the department.
