Operations Labor Manager (Tacoma)
Description: The Operations Labor Manager is responsible for directing and managing Longshore labor to efficiently discharge and load cargo to and from vessels while maximizing productivity promoting safety awareness and regulatory compliance and controlling operation costs
Job Responsibilities:
Manage longshore labor to achieve maximum productivity and optimize operational costs by making sure Longshore labor understands and follows formal standards of cargo handling to prevent injuries and reduce damages
- Monitor all Longshore labor making sure labor is properly identified on all payroll records, authorize any necessary overtime, and verify payroll for accuracy
- Manage personnel performance which includes determining and coordinating hiring, ordering, scheduling, and the discipline of labor
- Determine necessary terminal equipment requirements and coordinate with other terminal operations departments as well as resolve operational issues
- Continuously monitor to ensure compliance with company policy, state, federal, and Pacific Coast Marine safety codes/regulations
- Constantly improve knowledge of Longshore Contracts; protect company interests when resolving on-the-job labor issues with business agents and union officials; address, adjust, and resolve grievances and implement appropriate resolution.
- Actively participate in Labor Relations Committee (LRC) meetings and cooperatively determine appropriate resolution
- Advise senior or executive management of any operational issues that would impact production
- Prepare various reports and forms such as those related to shift production and safety summaries
- Identify and thoroughly investigate accidents, incidents, damages, and injuries; respond to unsafe operations or emergencies and generate timely and accurate reports
- Perform all other job-related duties as required
Qualifications:
- Should possess a bachelor's degree in marine operations or related discipline (may have equivalent experience instead of degree)
- Must have prior supervisory or management, project or team leader experience in container terminal operations, maritime transportation, or related industry
- Must have the ability to work any shift assigned including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Must have the ability to lead by example, adapt to changing circumstances, communicate effectively, build strong teams, make sound decisions, resolve problems, and develop rapport with Business Agents, Union Officials and Longshore labor
- Must be able to make quick decisions and react expeditiously and efficiently establish a plan of action and coordinate efficient execution
- Must have strong leadership skills and inspire others to accomplish goals and encourage high standards of performance
- Must have the ability to prioritize tasks and objectives, high-level skill of planning, organizational and time management skills
- Knowledge of container terminal operations, especially vessel cargo plans and sequencing of cargo handling activities
- Must be able to use independent judgment and discretion to administer and carry out discipline of Longshore labor, including warning, citing, replacing, or firing labor
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide direction to individuals, teams, and groups
- Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office products (Word & Excel); a plus if prior experience with a Terminal Operating System

Salary : $95,000 - $110,000
