What are the responsibilities and job description for the SCADA Engineering Intern position at Eversource?
Distribution SCADA Engineer intern, focusing on the building out of our database and SCADA screen displays used by our System Operation Centers.
Job Description
Come join our Engineering Team at Eversource, our future is clean energy and helping to build an exciting new energy future! The intern will be trained to be responsible for operating support and maintenance of Eversource’s System Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
Our SCADA platform is a mission-critical system used for monitoring and controlling the sub-transmission and distribution electric power system. Support will include using data engineering tools to update and maintain complex real-time databases in support of system monitoring, operation and control, and to model and diagnose data quality issues impacting SCADA. Responsibilities include building out displays, modifying our database, and helping with ongoing project work surrounding the way our field devices interact with our current downstream infrastructure.
Essential Functions :
- Develop, coordinate, implement, maintain and administer Eversource’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, and Energy Management System (SCADA / EMS) that includes expanding real-time databases, displays, calculations, and applications.
- Develop and produce reports documenting SCADA / EMS performance.
- Actively participate in support and troubleshooting problems in all aspects of the EMS / SCADA system, specifically data acquisition issues : Front-end Communication processor issues, and the protocols used by SCADA to collect data from field (RTUs) and The Inter-Control Center Protocol (ICCP).
- Maintain strong working relationships and work effectively with Eversource’s Engineering, Planning, System Protection, Field Engineering, and Communications, and other operating personnel in Eversource throughout the various stages of capital projects and initiatives in scheduling and installing updates to the system and providing technical support for operating issues.
- Work with our engineering team to take on roles that are currently hard to fill due to our day-to-day workload. Our team is heavily involved with multiple projects straining our team, and this role will help fill those needs and provide much-needed resources to help us meet our project timelines.
- Projects involved include, but are not limited to, helping build out field devices within SCADA as we begin to expand our radio network to accommodate multiple spectrums. This role will also be asked to help scrub and improve the quality of displays that the operators interact with on a day-to-day basis, providing greater ease to navigate and ensuring proper data is coming in.
- This will be a measurable and project-minded role that requires a certain level of self-starting and focus. Due to the nature of the work required (building displays, modifying our database, becoming familiar with backend systems that power our electrical grid), you will become familiar with the critical components needed that few people have a chance to.
