The Impact You Will Make
The Tax Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy and compliance of tax filings, directly impacting Everstory’s financial integrity. Through managing critical tax processes, including income tax returns, personal property filings, and exemption maintenance, this role helps optimize tax efficiency and mitigate risks. Their attention to detail and proactive approach supports timely, accurate reporting, fostering strong relationships with regulatory authorities. By driving consistency and accuracy in tax operations, the Tax Accountant contributes to the company’s overall financial health and operational excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales tax returns for funeral homes and cemeteries across multiple states, ensuring timely remittance and compliance with state and local tax regulations.
- Record sales tax payments accurately through book entries for the appropriate legal entities, supporting consistent financial reporting.
- Research tax classification and rate changes using BNA Research to maintain compliance with evolving tax laws.
- Manage Personal Property Tax filings, including asset transfer research, accurate tax reporting, remittance processing, and dispute resolution with state and local authorities.
- Oversee annual exemption filings to maintain tax-exempt status in California, Washington, and Indiana, supported by detailed land usage data and legal research.
- Assist the Senior Tax Accountant with preparing income tax returns, extensions, and estimated payments for Everstory Parent Corporation and related entities.
- Prepare trial balances, complete book-to-tax journal entries, and manage OneSource data uploads, while supporting ad hoc projects and maintaining organized tax records.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, tax.
- 1 – 2 years of experience in tax return preparation.
- CPA or equivalent certification a plus.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Experience with sales tax, personal property tax, and income tax preparation is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with tax exemption filings and resolving tax-related disputes with state and local authorities is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, data analysis).
- Experience with tax software, such as OneSource, and research tools like BNA Research.
