Position Overview
Thurston Middle School is seeking a dedicated Special Education Teacher for our Language-Based Classroom. This educator will provide targeted instruction, support diverse learners, and foster an inclusive environment that promotes academic success.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement engaging, structured lessons aligned with Massachusetts curriculum frameworks and district goals.
- Establish and maintain a positive classroom environment that supports students' academic and social-emotional growth.
- Utilize differentiated instruction to meet the varied needs of students with language-based learning disabilities.
- Assess student progress using formative and summative assessments to guide instruction and intervention.
- Collaborate with general education teachers, specialists, and support staff to analyze student work, develop interventions, and refine teaching strategies.
- Understand and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans, ensuring appropriate accommodations and modifications.
- Communicate regularly and effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress.
- Participate in team meetings, professional development, and school initiatives.
- Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the building principal in accordance with collective bargaining agreements.
Required Qualifications
- Massachusetts teaching certification in Special Education: Special Education Moderate
- Certification in explicit reading instruction (OG/Wilson et al) and experience in Language-Based Classrooms
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of language-based learning disabilities and evidence-based instructional strategies for students with specific learning disabilities
- Knowledge of MA curriculum frameworks and special education regulations.
- Effective classroom management and ability to foster a structured learning environment.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work with colleagues, students, and families.
- Proficiency in using technology for instruction and communication.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work primarily takes place in a classroom setting, with movement throughout the school building.
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students, staff, and families.
- Travel between buildings may be required.
