Job Summary

The Student Ready Advisor plays a critical role in supporting student success (progression, retention, and completion) by providing academic advising, career planning, and personal development guidance to college students. This position helps students navigate academic challenges, set and achieve educational and career goals, and connect with campus resources to enhance their college experience. Assists with the administration and coordination of one or more essential academic or coaching program(s) or initiative(s). Assists with the training and onboarding of new student ready advisors and may provide supervision of a small team of advisors and support staff.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Conduct holistic academic advising and coaching for current and prospective at promise student populations utilizing multiple modalities such as in-person, virtual, phone, and email.
  • Provide guidance on academic topics such as degree requirements and relevant course selection and provide students with assistance in setting and achieving educational and career goals.
  • Help students make informed academic decisions by teaching them how to track their academic progress, locate and interpret appropriate policies, and utilize the tools and resources available.
  • Monitor the academic progress of a caseload.
  • Analyze and interpret student data, transcripts, and placement results.
  • Enter notes into Inspire, following best practices for documenting student appointments/contacts/interventions.
  • Caseload management requires keeping abreast of relevant academic programs and support services such as counseling, career coaching, and tutoring within a College and the University and referring students as appropriate.
  • Speaks to various constituencies representing the DSS and University community (e.g., students, advisors, parents, faculty, administrators, etc.) regarding the coaching and advising processes and other activities. May require teaching a section UNIV 1131 reserved for enrolled at- promise students.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of all applicable federal, state, and University policies and procedures as it relates the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) and other THECB regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with four (4) years of experience working with college students in an academic advising or coaching capacity or a equivalent mix of education and relevant experience in similar role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of progressive academic advising experience at a public R1 University.
  • Leadership and/or supervisory experience at an institution of higher education.
  • Experience implementing, monitoring, and assessing student development programs/projects. Academic Advisor II

  • High impact academic advising and/or coaching practices; CAS standards; University academic advising and coaching practices
  • Federal, state, and local policies and procedures governing academic advising and/or coaching;
  • Administrative functions as it relates to advising and coaching; college/school major and degree requirements; and resources provided by organizations such as Life Bound, NACADA and TEXAAN
  • A working knowledge and ability to utilize the University Catalog is essential
  • Student advocacy; written and verbal interpersonal communication; organizing information and projects; problem solving; adhering to deadlines; taking initiative; resource management; proactive outreach; and navigating student information systems
  • Lead others; work professionally, collaboratively, and independently; build strong relationships with internal and external constituents;
  • Work with sensitive information and to maintain the highest level of confidentiality
  • Run reports and assess efforts; track and monitor student progress and help implement appropriate student interventions; use a full array of organizational resources appropriately;
  • Apply student recruitment/outreach/retention skills; prioritize work with a high degree of initiative; manage multiple projects, assignments, and responsibilities;
  • Proficiently use Microsoft Office Programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, Civitas or other Student Information Systems.

  • Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working collaboratively with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.
