Job Summary
Under the direction of the Registered Nurse Preceptor, the Nurse Extern’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, utilization of the nursing process in the provision of care, communicating with all members of the health care team to assure patient goals are being met and coordinated, providing excellent customer service while supporting the patients and families physical and emotional heath.
Essential Job Functions
- Under the direction of the RN preceptor, provides patient care through an interdisciplinary approach by assessing, planning, providing care and evaluating outcomes. Assures necessary communication with the healthcare team to assist the patient in meeting their goals.
- Under the direction of the RN preceptor, performs nursing interventions and documents according to policy and procedure assuring patient safety. Ie : medication administration, medication reconciliation, fall prevention, VTE prevention, and all prescribed interventions as appropriate.
- Assists the RN preceptor in the practice of professional nursing by providing direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate the performance of diagnostic and treatment procedures as outlined in the nursing care plan. Performs assigned tasks that make include activities of daily living such as dietary and hygiene needs. Assists in ambulating, turning, and positioning patients as well as transporting patients, answering call lights, and reporting observations to the patient’s nurse.
- Demonstrates professional behavior, strong customer service and communication skill, when interacting with all individuals and groups, both internally and externally.
- Assists the RN with indirect care by maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and / or control infections and to provide for safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
