DECKINEER

Job Summary:

The Deckineer reports to the Captain/Pilot and is responsible for the safe, efficient activities of the deck crew. Deckineer will perform any combination of the following duties: inspect engines and other equipment and repair or replace defective parts, start engines to propel the motor vessel; observe that all equipment and systems are operating within acceptable limits; repair machinery using manual and power tools; maintain engine room logbooks; prepare equipment and inventory requisitions; and be able to perform those duties of a deckhand.

The Deckineer is primarily accountable for his own health, safety, and cleanliness. Deckineer must be familiar with McNational, Inc. policies, procedures, safety rules and regulations, and must abide by them at all times as well as applicable laws, regulations, and other legal requirements.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

· None.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

Duties/Responsibilities:

· Deckineer must know, follow, and carry out all company safety rules, procedures, and policies as stated in the MCNATIONAL, INC. Safety Management System and applicable regulations.

· Deckineer must maintain main engines, auxiliaries, piping, wiring, tools, and other vessel machinery in good, clean working order.

· Deckineer must maintain discipline and order within the engine room while on watch.

· To record and maintain records as required of the Engineering Department.

· To periodically service barge pumps and maintain pump and engine part inventories.

· To ensure that all parts and supplies, provision and equipment necessary for the safe, efficient operations of the engine room are available.

· To advise the Captain/Pilot of propulsion or control system deficiencies which might reduce the vessel’s operating capability.

· To report deficiencies or malfunctions of machinery and equipment to the Port Engineer and Captain including main engines, auxiliary engines and generator sets, systems, rudders, propellers, bilge, ballast, air hydraulic systems, electrical systems, refrigeration systems, and all other associated equipment.

· To be responsible for his/her safety and the safety of fellow crew members and the vessel at all times and to report immediately to the Captain/Pilot all safety hazards and dangerous conditions which might be encountered on the motor vessel or the tow.

· To report unsafe conditions to the wheelhouse person on watch and to take whatever action is necessary to prevent accidents.

· Adhere to the provisions of the Certificate of Insurance (COI) if applicable.

· To ensure the wheelhouse person on watch is made aware of all known aspects of the condition of the vessel.

· To minimize any distraction from the operation of the vessel or performance of duty.

· From time to time, perform other duties as may be assigned by the Port Engineer or Captain/Pilot.

· Must be able to pass required drug testing

Education and Experience:

· High school diploma or equivalent to apply a common sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written and oral instructions and deal with complex mechanical problems in a variety of situations.

· Previous experience for this position is required. The applicant should be able to demonstrate from previous employment and past experience the ability to perform the essential functions of this position as well as the ability to work safely and efficiently in the engine room.

Physical Requirements:

The physical work demands for this position are classified as very heavy work, during which time the employee will exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects when making tow or performing other assigned tasks.

Mental Requirements:

The nature of this work requires that the Deckineer have the ability to concentrate on each assigned duty so as to perform the task in a safe, efficient manner. He must remain alert at all times while on watch. He should be able to communicate effectively when speaking or writing.

Working Conditions:

Work will be performed inside the Engine Room, which is a noisy environment and requires strict adherence to hearing protection rules. The Deckineer will work around many moving parts and will use a variety of manual and power tools. From time to time, he will be required to work in small, confined spaces. Work will also be performed outside either on deck of motor vessel or on barges in tow, day or night, during all seasons of the year, in all conditions of weather including weather extremes of heat and cold.

Equipment Used:

In the performance of his duties, the Deckineer will use a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, barge pumps, running lights, ratchets, cheater bars, sledge hammers, toothpicks, marlin spikes, fids, rigging, boat and barge attachments, such as timberheads, spools, kavels, buttons, hand tools, hand and electric hoists, drills and drill presses, hydraulic jacks, air and electric grinders, air impact wrenches, air compressors, electric saws, air operated paint sprayers, voltmeters and ohmmeters, arc welders, and oxygen and acetylene torch sets, safety equipment including work vest and safety (steel-toed) boots, work gloves, flashlights or other personal lighting systems, hoses, mops, brushes, and boat and barge winches.

7 days on, 7 days off

Go home daily

12 hour days
