Dean of Practical Nursing - Miami, FL
The Practical Nursing Program Dean is responsible for the overall administration and success of the Practical Nursing program. Key duties include curriculum development and assessment, class scheduling and staffing, instructor oversight and mentorship, externship coordination, community outreach, teaching, academic advising, and student support. The Dean also stays current in healthcare trends, research, and teaching strategies while contributing to broader program and institutional initiatives.
Essential Responsibilities:
Instruction & Curriculum
- Teach assigned courses and substitute when necessary.
- Oversee curriculum design, development, revision, and assessment, including defining course objectives, instructional methods, and learning outcomes.
- Recommend program-related materials, textbooks, and equipment for purchase; ensure quality and safety of instructional materials.
- Manage special projects as assigned by the Campus President (e.g., orientations, campus events, accreditation preparation).
- Actively engage in student retention efforts, documenting communication on attendance and progress.
- Assist students with registration, academic advising, and support instructors with effective counseling strategies.
- Support the Clinical Coordinator in establishing and maintaining externship sites; monitor student placement and performance.
- Identify at-risk students and refer them to appropriate academic support services.
- Ensure learning outcomes are delivered in alignment with course syllabi.
- Maintain safety and sanitation standards in labs and with all instructional equipment and supplies.
Leadership
- Hire, train, mentor, and evaluate faculty; facilitate regular faculty meetings to maintain curriculum relevance.
- Submit annual documentation of professional development in education theory or instructional techniques.
- Chair Advisory Board meetings (minimum twice per year); develop community relationships to support student job placement, externship setup, and engagement.
- Participate in scheduled program meetings, academic workshops, and institutional events.
- Uphold and support institutional academic policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with the Campus President on program evaluation and strategic planning.
- Ensure program faculty meet current licensure, certification, and professional development requirements.
- Encourage student engagement through clear communication and respectful interaction.
- Respond promptly to student inquiries and concerns.
- Attend graduation ceremonies.
- Conduct or support annual evaluations of program faculty.
Professional Development
- Attend in-service training and relevant discipline-specific professional development activities.
- Complete an annual performance appraisal with the Campus President.
- Maintain credentials required by accrediting agencies and regulatory bodies.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree.
- At least three (3) years of practical nursing experience.
- One (1) to two (2) years of teaching experience in the field of practical nursing.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong organizational and administrative skills.
- Certification in Practical Nursing.
- Possess required state-issued professional license or certification.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
