Key Responsibilities:
- Activity Planning and Coordination: Develop, implement, and evaluate daily, weekly, and monthly activity schedules that cater to the diverse needs and preferences of residents with memory impairment, including art, music therapy, sensory stimulation, reminiscence therapy, group games, exercise programs, and individualized activities.
- Individualized Care Plans: Collaborate with care staff, families, and other team members to create personalized activity plans tailored to residents’ cognitive levels, interests, abilities, and personal histories.
- Resident Engagement: Encourage participation in activities, offering one-on-one or small group sessions when necessary to foster socialization, creativity, and emotional well-being.
- Memory Care Techniques: Utilize dementia-friendly techniques such as sensory-based activities, reminiscence therapy, life enrichment programs, and memory enhancement games.
- Staff Training and Support: Provide training and guidance to staff and volunteers on engaging residents in meaningful activities, emphasizing the importance of activities in memory care.
- Family Involvement: Communicate with family members to ensure their loved ones receive fulfilling activities, offering periodic updates on participation and enjoyment.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of resident participation, preferences, and behavioral or cognitive changes, reporting outcomes to management.
- Environment Management: Ensure activity spaces are safe, welcoming, and well-equipped to promote comfort and engagement.
- Compliance and Safety: Ensure all activities meet regulatory standards, safety guidelines, and best practices for memory care. Report any concerns regarding resident safety or well-being.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Therapy, Gerontology, Psychology, or a related field preferred.
- Certification: Certified Activity Director (Preferred).
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years in an activities director or recreation therapy role, preferably in an assisted living or memory care setting.
- Knowledge: Understanding of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and therapeutic activity techniques specific to memory care.
- Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Creativity and flexibility in planning and facilitating activities.
- Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple activities and schedules.
- Ability to assess individual needs and adapt activities accordingly.
- Experience working with individuals with cognitive impairments.
- Ability to stand, walk, and participate in activities for extended periods.
- Ability to lift or assist in lifting up to 25 lbs.
- Must be able to engage in activities that require mobility, such as walking, bending, or reaching.
- Willingness to adhere to and enforce all safety policies and procedures.
- Work will take place within the assisted living facility, including indoor and outdoor activity spaces.
- Requires flexibility in providing physical assistance, behavior management, and adapting to residents’ changing needs.
