What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Med/Surg and ED position at Excelsior Springs City Hospital?
The Director assumes 24/7 accountability for the Emergency Department and Med/Surg Department. This is accomplished by representing Administration during the absence of the Chief Operating / Nursing Officer. The Director is accountable to provide nursing care which meets the needs of the community and to act as a resource to the customers of Excelsior Springs Hospital and to assist in resolving urgent facility needs.
Responsibilities:
- Assures safe staffing levels for all shifts and matches staff competency with patient acuity.
- Readily identifies opportunities for performance improvement and engages staff to implement and monitor performance improvement plan on an annual basis.
- Ensures training and education opportunities are provided to staff to meet scope of practice requirements. This includes both onboarding/orientation education as well as continuing education opportunities as needs are identified.
- Interviews, hires, counsels, and disciplines employees as needed. Effectively manages conflict in both situations and relationships, working collaboratively with executive leadership to promote a professional and healthy work environment.
- Evaluates and provides input to executive leadership regarding department operating budget and capital budget. Monitors budget monthly and provides feedback regarding variances in labor and supply expenses.
- Works collaboratively with physicians and other organizational leaders to evaluate nursing services and make changes, as necessary.
- Maintains current clinical knowledge in ED and med/surg and uses evidence and guidelines from professional practice organizations to develop, update and revise policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates working knowledge and actively practices within scope to maintain clinical expertise.
- Current/working knowledge of regulatory requirements and maintains accountability for ensuring nursing staff are compliant with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Conditions of Participation.
- Develops short and long-term goals for nursing departments which support shared decision making and a culture of innovation.

Position Requirements:
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Missouri.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing required, master’s degree preferred.
- 3 years of previous nursing leadership experience preferred.
- Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the American Heart Association or preapproved provider.
- TNCC within 12 months of hire.
