Part-time Personal Assistant

Expand Yu is a third-party case management support service posting on behalf of clients participating in California's Self-Determination Program (SDP). Candidates will be hired by clients directly or by the client's chosen hiring agency, not by Expand Yu.

Summary

We are searching for a positive, flexible, emotionally intelligent, creative, and compassionate personal assistant. You will be supporting a disabled adult in their daily life at home and at school. Patience, open-mindedness, and a joyful and creative attitude are key for success in this role. The role will include household tasks like cooking and cleaning, as well as administrative and time-management type support.

Qualifications

• Must have your own vehicle that you can drive the employer in, and you must provide proof of a valid CA driver's license & current car insurance (mileage reimbursement provided)
• Must be able to pass a DOJ LiveScan background check (see note at the end)
• Must be bilingual in English and Spanish - Intermediate Spanish skill is sufficient (can understand even if you can’t speak it)
• Must be able to remain calm and support the individual during difficult situations, including responding appropriately to mental illness and mental health crises (may include depression, emotional dysregulation, and suicidality)
• Must have awareness and respect for the LGBTQIA community
• Must remain masked with an N95 equivalent or better and must remain mindful of hygiene throughout every shift.
• Must be highly organized and have excellent time-management and project management skills
• Must be good at keeping others on-track and directing others' attention without being demanding
• Must have strong computer skills
• Must be proactive, curious, and creative to meet the employer's needs
• Must be compassionate, flexible, and non-judgmental
• Must be able to respect autonomy while also providing accountability
• Looking for someone who is fun, positive, flexible, easy-going, and motivating
• Priority will be given to candidates with backgrounds or experience in mental health, occupational therapy, nutritional science, counseling, life coach, or similar.
• Priority will be given to candidates with lived experience with mental illness, neurodivergence, or queerness

Benefits

• Hourly Wage: $30 after a 1-month probation period
• Probation period paid at $20 / hour
• Mileage reimbursement at the federal rate of $0.70 / mile
• Clearing the SDP LiveScan makes you eligible to work for any Self-Determination Program participant
• Expected Hours: 12-18 hours per week

Responsibilities

• Prepare ingredients for cooking
• Prepare simple snacks and meals (ie. wash, cut, and store fruit)
• Wash dishes, clean out litter boxes, take out trash and other regular household cleaning tasks
• Provide reminders and prompts for personal care tasks and daily living tasks including taking medications, staying hydrated, taking breaks, exercising, etc.
• Assist with organizing and managing the employer's calendar and weekly schedule which includes personal tasks, college assignments, and administrative tasks
• Review the employer's tasks and responsibilities and actively help prioritize on a regular basis
• Collect and sort through mail and other paperwork
• Help manage bills and due dates
• Record and organize new tasks or responsibilities as they come up and work together with employer to prioritize and organize
• Be a sounding board for ideas, a partner to talk through things with and to calm down and regulate emotions with.
• Provide some emotional support, be encouraging, creative, and take things off their plate.

Feedback & Accountability

• This position will be supervised by two or three people from the employer's support circle.
• There will be a 1-month probationary period which includes:
• a review meeting with the supervisory team about halfway through the month to provide feedback and discuss any adjustments
• if the team agrees to keep you onboard after the end of the probationary period: your wages will be increased to $30 / hour
• After probationary period is over, regular review meetings will be scheduled with the supervisory team to discuss any areas of tension, conflicts, or adjustments to the role.

Note on DOJ Background Check

Please note that if you are not already working for a Self-Determination Program participant, you MUST complete a Live Scan fingerprinting when completing hiring paperwork. This Live Scan is specific to SDP. If you have a Live Scan for a different program such as IHSS, you still have to complete this step. Depending on the Live Scan provider, this may cost up to $75. This is a requirement from the state of California and cannot be waived or paid by the employer. If this is not possible for you, please do not apply. More details and paperwork for the Live Scan will be provided if chosen by the employer.
