Below is an overview of the Local Representative role with Expert AuPair.

What is an au pair?

Au pairs are young people from around the world between the age of 18-26 who come to the US on a J-1 visa. They are placed with host families around the US with whom they have matched. Au pairs are provided with room and board and a weekly stipend in exchange for up to 45 hours a week of childcare. Although they are providing childcare, and this is an important part of the program, the main purpose of the program is for the au pair to experience life in the US and for the host family they are living with to experience their au pair's culture. The program is overseen by the US Department of State, and so we (as the sponsoring agency) must ensure that the au pair and host family are abiding by the rules outlined by the US State Department.

The Local Representative Role:

Our agency is based in St Petersburg, Florida, but our au pair participants are placed with host families throughout the United States. The State Department requires that there is a Local Representative within a 60 minute drive of each au pair. The Local Representative is responsible for performing a few key duties, most importantly:

-Performing an Initial Interview with the host family prior to the au pair's arrival.

The main purpose of this interview is to ensure that the host family has a private bedroom for their au pair and also to meet the host parents to check they speak English fluently and are either US Citizens or Permanent Residents.

-48 Hour Welcome Call

After the au pair's arrival to her host family, call within 48 hours to introduce yourself to the au pair and welcome her to her new city.

-Performing an Orientation with the au pair and her host family within 2 weeks after her arrival.

In this meeting with both the host family and the au pair, you will complete an orientation in which the host family explains any household rules to the au pair, and the au pair should also ask any questions she may have at this time. You will complete the orientation form from our agency.

-Make Monthly Contact with both the au pair and host family.

Each month you will need to contact both the host family and the au pair (the contact can be made by email, Facebook, phone message, or whatever other method of communication you prefer). These monthly check-ins are a time when an au pair can express any concerns she may have with the family and the family can also express if they have any concerns with their au pair. The communication that you have each month with the host family and the au pair must be submitted by email to home office by the 20th of each month.

-Annual Family Day

Once a year, plan and execute a day for families/au pairs to get together and enjoy a morning or afternoon out.

You are paid for both the initial interview and orientation as two separate events ($50 each). Then, each month the au pair is with the family, you are paid for making the monthly contacts. If you send an email or make a phone call to check in, you will receive $40. If on the other hand you meet with the au pair in person, you will receive $60.

As a Local Representative, you play an important, fun & rewarding role in helping the au pair to adjust to life in the United States.
