The Workplace Success Mentor provides on-site coaching, skill-building, and performance evaluations for individuals with disabilities in entry-level and non-skilled job. This role is highly flexible and requires travel to various job sites to support clients in real work environments. The specialist will assess work skills, reinforce soft skills, and provide hands-on coaching to ensure job success and retention. Additionally, the specialist will work closely with employers to facilitate workplace accommodation and foster a supportive work environment.
Key Responsibilities
On-Site Job Performance Evaluation & Skill Assessment
- Travel to various job sites to conduct real-time evaluations of clients in their workplace settings.
- Observe client work behaviors, task completion, time management, and ability to follow instructions.
- Identify strengths and areas for improvement, including physical, cognitive, and communication barriers.
- Adapt assessments and coaching strategies based on specific job demands and work environments.
Hands-On, On-Site Job Coaching & Skill Development
- Provide direct, hands-on coaching at job sites to teach clients how to perform job tasks effectively.
- Break down complex tasks into smaller, more manageable steps based on the client's learning style.
- Use modeling, shadowing, and guided practice to reinforce correct workplace behaviors.
- Develop customized visual aids, checklists, or task reminders to support clients in their daily duties.
- Adjust coaching methods as needed depending on workplace setting, job role, and client progress.
Soft Skills & Workplace Behavior Training
- Coach clients on communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and professionalism.
- Reinforce positive workplace habits such as punctuality, hygiene, and appropriate interactions with coworkers and customers.
- Teach strategies for handling feedback, managing stress, and problem-solving on the job.
- Use real-life scenarios and role-playing to help clients understand workplace expectations.
Job Accommodation & Employer Collaboration
- Work closely with employers to ensure reasonable accommodation is in place to support client success.
- Recommend task modifications, adaptive tools, or schedule adjustments to enhance productivity.
Job Retention & Long-Term Support
- Maintain flexible scheduling to provide coaching support as needed for different shifts and job roles.
- Offer follow-up coaching sessions at varying times to align with employer and client needs.
- Monitor client progress and provide ongoing, site-specific coaching.
Reporting
- Maintain detailed documentation of client progress and areas for improvement.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in vocational Rehabilitation, Workforce Development, Special Education, Human Services, Psychology, or a related field
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities (intellectual, developmental, or physical) in a work-based or coaching setting.
- Previous experience in job coaching, employment training, vocational rehabilitation, workforce development, or special education.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong coaching and teaching abilities with the ability to break down tasks into step-by-step learning.
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with clients, employers, and workforce teams.
- Ability to adapt coaching techniques to meet individual learning styles and needs.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle workplace challenges effectively.
Other Requirements
- Ability to work a flexible schedule based on client job shifts and employer needs.
- Willingness to travel between multiple job sites within the designated service area.
- Ability to document progress reports and assessments accurately and in a timely manner.
