Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Wellness the Counselor will provide comprehensive support to meet the academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of students at Exploration. The counselor works collaboratively with students, staff, families, and community partners to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where all students can thrive.
Key Responsibilities
Student Support and Counseling:
- Provide individual and group counseling to address academic, social, emotional, and behavioral challenges.
- Support students in developing coping skills, conflict resolution strategies, and emotional regulation techniques.
- Support students in navigating personal and family challenges that may impact their school performance.
- Assist in identifying students needing additional interventions and provide support through MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports).
Academic Guidance:
- Collaborate with teachers to identify and support students with academic challenges.
- Develop and implement intervention strategies to help students succeed academically.
- Monitor academic progress and provide guidance on goal-setting and study skills.
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL):
- Promote positive behavior through proactive initiatives like peer mentoring, restorative practices, and school-wide SEL events.
Crisis Intervention:
- Respond promptly to crisis situations, including conflict mediation, mental health emergencies, or family crises.
- Connect students and families with appropriate resources, including mental health professionals or community services.
Collaboration and Advocacy:
- Work closely with teachers, deans, and support staff to create plans for student success.
- Advocate for equitable access to resources and opportunities for all students, particularly those facing systemic barriers.
- Serve as a liaison between the school and families to enhance communication and engagement.
Program Development and Implementation:
- Develop and implement school counseling programs aligned with district, state, and national standards.
- Alongside the schools Family Liaison, Organize events and workshops for students, parents, and staff on topics like bullying prevention and stress management.
- Coordinate with community organizations to bring in additional resources, such as mentorship programs or health services.
Data Collection and Reporting:
- Maintain detailed and confidential records of counseling activities and student progress.
- Analyze data to assess the effectiveness of counseling programs and identify areas for improvement.
- Prepare reports for school Directors as required.
School Culture and Climate:
- Contribute to a positive school climate by fostering an environment of respect, inclusivity, and understanding.
- Support initiatives aimed at reducing absenteeism, improving behavior, and increasing student engagement.
The Elementary School Counselor works in a dynamic school environment, balancing multiple priorities and addressing both scheduled and urgent needs. The position requires regular interaction with students, parents, staff, and community members.
Requirements
- Strong understanding of childhood development and culturally responsive practices.
- Able to work flexible hours as determined by school leaders
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Exceptional organizational skills with ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines with ease
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office 365 and/or GSuite
