Description

Basic Function

Manage and assist the members of the Tax Accounting Team (currently consisting of 4 members).  Prepare, file and/or review all tax reports, tax returns and tax payments produced by the Tax team, including Payroll Withholding, Sales, Local, Income, and Unemployment taxes.  Maintain current and accurate filings for all required business licensing for multiple state and local jurisdictions for multiple companies.  Manage sales tax exemption certificate process. Research and recommend application of tax laws and regulations for all locations where Express does business in the US and Canada, as well as monitor for changes.  Work with the outside tax preparers to gather and coordinate all Federal and State income tax information for Express Services, Inc. and its subsidiaries.  Prepare and file all forms 1095C, W2, and T4 with the IRS and CRA. Respond to all governmental agency information and audit requests.  Communicate and assist franchisees with implementation of new tax changes. Assist the Managing Director of Tax Accounting, as needed.

 

Typical Requirements

Requires an extensive knowledge of Federal, State, and Payroll tax regulations and related issues.  Knowledge of Excel & Word is required, as well as, the ability to research Federal, state and local tax laws and regulations.  Management experience over multiple employees and departments/functions required.  Knowledge of AS400 and JDEdwards Software is recommended, but not required. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Tasks are often new or frequently difficult requiring extensive judgment and ability to make recommendations and/or decisions where policies or precedents are not clearly defined and are performed under frequently changing conditions and problems.  Ability to analyze complex and in-depth regulations.  Must be able to interact with challenging outside tax advisors and regulatory auditors in a decisive and professional manner.

 

Supervision: Received - Given

Received – General directions, work from company policies, general objectives and governmental regulations.  Recommend revisions to company policy as new information is discovered.

Given – Depends on level of employee being supervised, can vary from direct and close supervision to general supervision.

 

Accuracy, Accountability and Control

Probable errors may cause inaccuracies in reports or records and may result in dissemination of inaccurate or incomplete information.  They affect activities based on reports, records, or related recommendations and may, to a limited degree, delay progress of programs or projects involved.  Errors could have serious financial and reputation impacts to the company.

 

Contacts: Internal - External

Contacts are made with no supervision.  Tact, judgment and discretion must be exercised to explain, interpret and influence others regarding delicate or sensitive matters.  Improper handling with external contacts could result in ill will with franchisees and miscommunication with external auditors and government agencies.

 

Specialized Skill or Technical Knowledge

Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, 5 years of accounting experience, and CPA certification or commensurate work experience required.

Franchise and company information is extremely confidential and must be disseminated to only the appropriate parties.

 

Working Conditions

This position is remote but will require a few days per month at the corporate office building.
