Information about the role
The Division of Protection Services in the Office of Museum Operations and Administration is currently seeking a Security Specialist. Reporting to the Deputy Director, Protection Services this position serves as a strategic partner for strengthening and evolving the standards and best practices related to initiating and making suitability determinations for Museum staff and contractors, as well as providing advice and guidance to the Director, Division of Protection Services on issues related to the Museum and threat management.
This position is located in Washington, DC and situational telework is eligible, within the local commuting area of the Museum worksite. This is a full-time donated position (non-Federal) paid with the Museum’s private funds. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Major Duties, and Responsibilities
- Plans and administers a program for the continuous security vetting for interns, volunteers, fellows and contractors.
- Monitors intelligence and threats that could impact the Museum and social media impacting the Museum.
- Assesses threat levels (external factors, communications sent to the Museum, individual staff, etc.)
- Conducts background investigation suitability adjudications for volunteers, fellows and contractors (and assists HR with adjudications for Federal and Donated employees).
- Conducts investigations related to security incidents at the Museum and other investigations as requested.
- Attends intelligence meetings (Council of Governments Intelligence Subcommittee, National Counter Terrorism Center, etc.), maintains a network.
- Assists Human Resources, as needed, in making suitability determinations for Museum employees.
- Reviews, evaluates and resolves sensitive adjudication processes for suitability, which includes special cases and/or highly visible/interest and priority actions.
- Establishes criteria and determines the sufficiency of personnel security evaluations, analyzes the results.
- Proactively and regularly communicates with staff, volunteers, interns, contractors, and other key stakeholders to resolve issues.
- Provides advice and guidance to the Director, Protection Services as it relates to threat management at the Museum, as needed.
- Provides advice and guidance to the Director, Protection Services as it relates to foreign travel as needed.
- Provides travel safety information for staff traveling internationally.
- Occasional travel might be needed or required.
Minimum Qualifications for the role
- At least ten years of relevant work experience.
- Bachelor Degree or equivalent work experience.
- Strong organizational skills & attention to detail essential.
- Ability to work in a time sensitive, deadline driven, demanding and sometimes stressful environment, taking initiative & prioritizing multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
- Ability to tackle challenges and stay flexible with changing priorities and needs.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work both independently & collaboratively as a member of a team.
- Possess a work style that is closely aligned with the Museum’s values including integrity humility, teamwork/collaboration, respect for others, and commitment to continuous learning.
Preferred Qualifications for the role
- Current Top-Secret Security Clearance or ability to obtain one.
- Experience with the National Background Investigation System.
