Description
The surgery coordinator/medical assistant is responsible for coordinating and scheduling of surgical cases and other procedures; and assists the registered nurse in the specific non-licensed or non-professional duties of patient care. Responsible to Center Director, Lead Nurse, and/or registered nurse in the assigned area.
Requirements
Schedules surgery patients at the Center according to established policies and procedures
- Schedules and registers all surgery patients at least one month in advance in Nextgen to include: ensuring all insurance and procedure information is accurate and complete, preparing and completing the charts, and printing labels
- Cancels surgery procedures in the system at the time of actual cancellation and tracks for trends
- Ensures that H & P’s, labs, surgery clearances, pathology, EKG’s, etc. are in the charts prior to surgery
- Compares surgery schedules to charts to ensure all patients have been captured
- Handles all surgery-related calls
- Collects data pertaining to the Patient Satisfaction Survey. Report findings to the Administrator to include in month-end statistics
- Orders all surgery-related chart supplies
- Distributes schedules for the next day to all departments
- Advises the nursing department of cases requiring special needs and/or accommodations
- Assists the registered nurse in the physical and psychological assessment of the patient pre-operatively
Performs other related duties as directed for the efficient operation of the Surgery Center
Collaborates with the registered nurse in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient
Implements and documents pre-procedural regimen of care according to policy and procedure
Shows an interest in the patient/family as an individual through activities such as answering questions and providing privacy
Requirements
Job Specifications
Typically has the following skills or abilities:
Certified in CPR
Minimum of one year MA experience preferred
Experience in pre-op/PACU or surgical suite desirable
High school graduate with courses in English and typing required
At least one year experience as a scheduler preferred, and medical background and knowledge
One to three months of on-the-job training given to attain adequate job proficiency
Verbal ability required to comprehend written instructions regarding scheduled procedures and
various Center forms
Clerical ability is required to avoid perceptual errors when completing patient information forms and other documents
Tact and understanding to deal with surgeons and their personnel to admit Center patients
Able to evaluate information against judgmental criteria interviewing Center patients

The compensation range for the role is listed below. Applicable salary ranges may differ across markets. Actual pay will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law. As a part of the compensation package, this role may include eligible bonuses and commissions.
