What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Scribe/Medical Assistant position at Eye Care and Surgery, P.A.?

We are a single location eye care practice in Laurel, Maryland looking for a team player who will handle both roles of Medical Scribe and Medical Assistant. This open position requires the candidate to work with the doctor to accurately document the elements of the patient visits and as needed to work directly with patients using state-of-the-art eye equipment.
When the need arises during times of short staffing, coverage of front desk duties and light billing work may be required.
Prior experience working for a medical office is required. On-the-job training will be provided for the right candidate.
We work alternating 4 day and 4.5 day work weeks. Expect approximately 70 to 72 hours per bi-weekly payroll. Expect 2-3 "3-day weekends" per month (Saturday, Sunday, and Monday off). Office hours are from 9am to 5pm with an occasional early start and late departure.
Our practice is a focused eye practice managing mostly diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, and age-related eye problems.
Job requirements
Our company is seeking a team player whose primary tasks will include:
- Assisting the doctor during majority of the patient encounters with documentation (typing) into the Electronic Medical Record.
- Assisting with finalizing the patient charts after the patient encounter under the direction of the doctor.
- Performing all elements of the patient work-up in an ophthalmology office including vision and pressure testing, imaging of the eye structures and utilization of advanced technology eye equipment.
- Assisting with general medical office day-to-day tasks, including maintaining patient records, sending faxes, contacting physician offices for information, performing inventory functions, and making sure all examination rooms are cleaned, stocked, and patient ready.
- Assisting in communications between our office and those of the referring providers.
- Light billing duties.
- Assisting with obtaining referrals required for patient visits prior to their appointments.
Candidate must be a “people person” who can display integrity and professionalism at all times. Our patient population is mostly the elderly, so we strive to respect their expectations of a “doctor’s visit.”
Since our systems are 100% computerized, candidate must have excellent typing skills.
Being organized is required for this position.
Being reliable is required for this position.
Being bilingual (English and Spanish) is a Plus but not a necessity.
Experience in the health care field is required for this position.

Starting salary range is $18 to $23 per hour based on prior experience. Raises will be offered based on progress and eligibility.
