SUMMARY
The Surgery Scheduler is responsible for the scheduling of ophthalmic surgeries and procedures at the ambulatory surgery centers and local hospitals. The Surgery Scheduler serves as a liaison between the patient, surgeon, facility and staff. The Surgery Scheduler position requires considerable attention to detail and follow-up with patients, transportation services, insurance carriers and guardians to patients. Ability to communicate with patients, surgeons, co-workers and management is critical. The Surgery Scheduler provides accurate data to the physicians, as well as acts as a patient advocate and educator. This position requires multi-tasking and complete follow through for proper coordination between physician and patient.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required
- Bachelor Degree or Associate Degree in a related field highly preferred
- Two years of medical support services required, preferably in ophthalmic surgery scheduling
- Experience with ophthalmic coding and the billing of surgical procedures is highly preferred

- Completely familiar with consent forms and all surgery scheduling paperwork
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Maintain Surgical Schedule for Physicians
a. Must be proficient with applicable software
b. Communicate necessary changes to physicians and managers
c. Contact appropriate facility for scheduling of surgical procedures
d. Coordinate all pre-operative/post-operative visits with patient
e. Consistently schedule surgery days to the mutual satisfaction of the patient, the surgeon and the facility
f. Coordinates and processes all necessary paperwork
2. Knowledge in Pre - Operative Testing/Insurance Requirements
a. Complete all surgical and procedural consents according to practice and facility protocols
b. Inform the patient of their expected financial responsibility
c. Inform the patient of their insurance coverage
d. File all patient consents in an accurate manner
3. Effective Surgical Patient Management
a. Communicate effectively to patients all aspects of eye surgery and procedures
b. Communicate to patients in a manner that instills understanding and confidence regarding the upcoming procedure
c. Provide the patient with all supportive information related to the procedure and facility
4. Professional and Personal Development/Goals and Objectives
a. Exhibit professional demeanor with a positive enthusiastic attitude at all times when representing the practice
b. Establish and maintains rapport with all vendor/customer representatives
c. Maintain certification, where applicable while continuing to improve skills
d. Sets goals and objectives for professional growth. Review and revise goals on an ongoing basis
e. Provide input on how to improve customer service, decrease costs and increase revenues for the practice
5. Customer Service
a. Support the practice core values and mission statement to develop, enhance and promote quality customer service through team effort
b. Exhibit flexibility, sensitivity and respect while maintaining an effective working relationship with all team members
6. Maintain practice confidentiality, follow HIPAA & OSHA guidelines and the rules and regulations of the practice as documented
7. Maintain proper standards of productivity as defined by management
8. Complete any tasks noted in the practice pay for performance program
9. Perform other duties as assigned

- The majority of the time on-the-job is spent walking and sitting
- At times the job may require weight to be lifted up to 50 pounds unassisted
