Position Overview
The Habilitation Training Specialist is responsible for providing direct care and support to individuals with developmental disabilities, assisting them in developing life skills, improving social interactions, and fostering independence. This role includes implementing individualized plans, working with clients to achieve personal goals, and creating an environment that promotes learning, safety, and well-being. The Habilitation Training Specialist will collaborate with clients, families, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure a holistic, client-centered approach to care.
Key Responsibilities
1. Client Support and Care
- Provide direct, one-on-one support to clients with developmental disabilities, assisting with daily activities and personal care needs (e.g., hygiene, dressing, grooming).
- Implement and follow individualized service plans (ISPs) and goals to assist clients in achieving milestones in communication, socialization, and self-care.
- Encourage and support clients in developing independence through life skills training (e.g., meal preparation, money management, housekeeping, and personal hygiene).
- Use behavioral techniques to assist clients in managing behaviors and promoting positive interactions with peers and staff.
- Provide assistance with mobility, transportation, and community integration as needed.
- Support clients during outings or recreational activities, ensuring safety and engagement.
2. Skill Development
- Implement personalized training programs focused on building functional and adaptive skills, based on client goals and needs.
- Promote social skills development by guiding clients through appropriate social interactions (e.g., greetings, taking turns, resolving conflicts).
- Foster independence in daily living tasks such as feeding, dressing, and managing personal hygiene.
- Provide sensory, cognitive, and physical development activities to enhance motor skills, coordination, and sensory processing.
- Use positive reinforcement and motivational strategies to encourage desired behaviors and skill acquisition.
3. Behavior Management
- Monitor and track client behavior, addressing any challenging behaviors using de-escalation techniques and positive behavior support strategies.
- Collaborate with the team to create and implement individualized behavioral intervention plans (BIPs).
- Document incidents and progress, noting any changes in behavior or health that need to be addressed by the team.
- Ensure a safe and supportive environment for clients, intervening when necessary to prevent harm to themselves or others.
4. Health and Safety
- Ensure clients’ physical and emotional needs are met, including monitoring health conditions, administering medications (if applicable), and observing for signs of illness or distress.
- Follow safety protocols in all activities, including emergency response procedures, infection control practices, and reporting any accidents or injuries.
- Assist clients in using adaptive equipment (e.g., mobility devices, communication aids) and ensure it is maintained properly.
- Ensure that the environment is free of hazards and is suitable for client activities.
5. Documentation and Reporting
- Complete daily logs and documentation of client progress, behaviors, and activities, ensuring accurate and up-to-date records.
- Document and report any concerns regarding client health, behavior, or safety to the Program Coordinator or supervisor.
- Update client files with relevant information and ensure compliance with agency policies and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute insights regarding client development, concerns, and success stories.
6. Team Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate with other team members (e.g., case managers, behavioral therapists, program coordinators) to ensure a holistic approach to client care and development.
- Share observations and provide feedback during team meetings to ensure that client goals and ISPs are being effectively implemented.
- Communicate with family members, caregivers, and other professionals to discuss client progress, challenges, and upcoming needs.
- Attend training sessions and workshops to stay updated on best practices in working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
7. Advocacy and Support
- Advocate for the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities, ensuring they receive appropriate services and respect in all interactions.
- Empower clients by promoting self-advocacy and supporting them in expressing their wants, needs, and preferences.
- Encourage client participation in community activities and assist in facilitating integration into the community.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Psychology, Social Work, Special Education) preferred.
- Previous experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or in a related field is preferred.
- Experience with behavior management techniques, personal care assistance, and life skills training is a plus.
- CPR and First Aid certification required (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
- Must be 18 years old

- Ability to remain on your feet for extended periods, especially during program activities.
- Ability to assist clients with transferring, walking, or other physical needs.
- May involve bending, stooping, and other physical tasks related to client care.
Work Environment
- The position involves both direct client interaction and administrative duties, including documentation and reporting.
- The work environment may involve interactions with clients who have varying levels of behavioral and medical needs, requiring the ability to manage and respond to a range of situations.
- The position may require working evenings, weekends, or holidays depending on the program schedule and client needs.
