West Chester Area School District has the following position available with our Facilities & Operations Department:
1.0 Mechanic Apprentice **Internal Only**
SUMMARY:
The Mechanic Apprentice will be given daily assignments by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds which will have him assist electricians, plumbers, HVAC mechanics and grounds mechanics in their work assignments. Occasionally, the Apprentice will be asked to operate independently on work assignments.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
- Reports directly to the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds
- Works cooperatively with administrators, supervisors, staff and others to perform job responsibilities as outlined
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- As outlined in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement
- Salary & Benefits are as described in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
QUALIFICATIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill and/or ability necessary.
- High School diploma or equivalent necessary
- Current PA driver’s license
- Basic computer skills
- Possess effective interpersonal skills (written and oral) with the ability to interface diplomatically with teachers, administrators, support staff and outside professional contacts
- Sincere desire to expand knowledge in the building trades and grounds maintenance
- Must be able to follow directions and work independently with minimal supervision
- Must be able to work on ladders and scaffolding up to 40 feet
- Act 34 and 151 Clearance required
Qualified candidate will be required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and to talk and hear; Sit and occasionally be required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel and crouch; Have specific vision abilities, to include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus; Have the ability to lift and/or move a minimum of 75 pounds; and possess effective communication, judgmental, planning and human relations skills, and will be required to work under periods of stress due to the level of the position responsibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Assist electricians, carpenters, HVAC mechanics and general mechanics in the completion of the daily work assignments
- Perform grounds maintenance including mowing, trash pickup, sweeping, trimming, raking, watering and snow removal and plowing.
- Provides assistance and backup for loading and unloading, receiving and distribution of warehouse materials and equipment.
- Willingness to learn proper use of hand tools, power tools, maintenance and grounds equipment.
- Respond to emergencies during and after work hours as needed.
- Performs all other duties as directed or assigned by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.
