GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Performs responsible skilled and intermediate semiskilled work in the maintenance, repair, modification, installation and construction of structures in school buildings and facilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a facility maintenance supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over helpers.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Performing skilled and semiskilled maintenance and repair work in painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, masonry, roofing, welding or a related field.
Performs rough and finished carpentry; builds shelving and cabinets;
Repairs wooden structures and equipment such as doors, door locks, windows, roofs, walls, floors, benches, desks, chairs, fences, playground equipment, counter tops, etc.;
Installs paneling, tile, ceilings and other items in buildings;
Prepares and paints interior and exterior of buildings, tables, benches, shelters, parking lots, etc.;
Installs and replaces electrical equipment or wiring, breakers, switches, controls, motors and light sources;
Performs masonry work; installs sidewalks;
Installs, rebuilds and maintains plumbing in buildings; installs faucets, flush valves, etc.;
Does welding and fabricates metal fixtures;
Estimates material needs and purchases materials;
Assists other trades and snow removal as necessary;
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools and terminology of the mechanical or building trade to which assigned; general knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials; general knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the assigned trade; skill in the use of tools and equipment; ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs; good physical condition.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in one or more of the building trades.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
