Exciting and interesting technical challenges await when you join a world-class research team dedicated to reducing the impact of natural hazards. FM helps clients maintain continuity in their business operations by drawing upon state-of-the-art engineering and research.
The Climate Risk & Resilience Team at FM is seeking a creative, self-motivated individual for an internship in Norwood, MA. The intern will work under the supervision of senior staff and will have the opportunity to tackle real-world science and engineering challenges in the insurance industry. The project involves:
- Cleaning past tornado loss data
- Linking these losses to known tornadoes and tornado outbreak events
- Collecting available engineering information related to the losses
- Creating a searchable GIS database
The internship is planned to last 3 to 6 months. By the end of the internship, the intern will gain experience in
- Tornado research
- Insurance losses
- Wind engineering
Qualifications
We are looking for undergraduate students in good academic standing who wish to expand their research experience beyond academia. Ideal candidates will have:
- Attention to detail
- Strong analytical skills
- GIS skills (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, GDAL)
- Experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, R, Python, and FORTRAN
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Comfort with writing shell scripts and using APIs to automate workflows
- Familiarity with both Microsoft Windows and Linux environments
This is an in-office role based in Norwood, MA. Temporary relocation support provided for selected qualified candidate.
