Job Title: Nursing Supervisor

Department: Nursing

Reports To: DON

FLSA Status: Nonexempt


 

SUMMARY: The purpose is to assist the nurse(s) assigned to the unit in their day to day recording and charting of medical, nursing and administrative information in accordance with the federal, state and local standards. Assure audits are completed for QA purposes and maintain the highest quality of clinical standards of care that is rendered to residents at FKHV.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following but are not limited to:

 

  1. With the assistance of Clerical Coordinator, the completion of monthly facility laboratory schedules.
  2. Complete laboratory logs on assigned laboratory days to ensure proper handling of all abnormal laboratory results and report monthly to the QACC for QA/QI purposes. Maintain a lab book for each unit that has each resident’s routine lab orders and the dates due.
  3. Weekly “Change-in-Condition’ Audit to ensure proper documentation of resident change of conditions, notification of PCP, and notification of POA/families. Report any deficiencies to the appropriate person and ensure the proper follow up is completed. Report monthly to the QACC for QA/QI purposes.
  4. Assessment and documentation as needed for Pain Committee with monthly report to the QACC for QA/QI purposes. Assure hat the appropriate follow up is completed.
  5. Attendance to weekly Care Planning Committee as needed. Assure follow-up of any Committee concerns or requests is completed
  6. Attendance to Manager’s Meeting as scheduled.
  7. Complete admission audits for new admissions and readmissions within 72 hours of admission. Assure all discrepancies are followed up appropriately. Report to the QACC for QA/QI purposes.
  8. Attendance to the monthly QI/QM meetings with assigned QI indicator reviews completed and followed up appropriately.
  9. Weekly skin round and follow up with wound nurse. Attendance to weekly Fall, Hydration, Wound committee. Assure all recommendations from the committee are followed up in a timely manner.
  10. Follow up on all incident reports (with typed investigations as needed) and ensure that all appropriate interventions are completed. Log all of the incident reports on the appropriate tracking form. Give all completed incident reports to the QACC.
  11. Schedule all routine weights to be completed weekly. Schedule reweights as needed. Enter all weights into the AAOD weight tracking system. Assure all weights are charted in the resident’s chart and treatment records.
  12. Complete associate evaluations as delegated by DON/ADON.
  13. Follow up with resident complaints and abuse allegations appropriately.
  14. Supervision of licensed and non licensed staff on assigned unit with appropriate discipline as needed.
  15. Maintenance of assigned dining rooms to ensure a proper dining experience of all residents.
  16. Maintenance of a current tray list line-up. Submit list to Dining Services Manager or his/her designee.
  17. Assure all symbols are appropriate for each resident including, but not limited to assistance symbols, falling stars, thickened liquids, wandering, etc…
  18. Assure that all pharmacy reviews are followed up appropriately.
  19. All duties expected of a staff nurse, due to the possibility of being utilized on the units as a staff nurse but only after other avenues have been exhausted, such as per diem staffing and agency staffing.
  20. Doctor rounds weekly with the completion of any physician orders as ordered.
  21. Review BM sheets.
  22. Reviews the 24 hour report daily and ensures that all clinical issues are followed up in a timely and appropriate manner: falls and accidents, infections, pressure sores and other significant changes in conditions.
  23. Other duties as assigned.

 

SAFETY

 

  1. Report equipment malfunctions to appropriate staff and complete work orders when indicated.
  2. Identify and remove safety hazards/devices and report to appropriate personnel.
  3. Assure a safe, clean, and clutter-free environment.
  4. Utilize standard precautions by wearing protective equipment. (goggles, gown, gloves when indicated) Also using correct hand-washing techniques.
  5. Follow facility fire and safety policies.

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position requires supervision of LPN’s, CMA’s, GNA’s and Unit Clerks. However, discipline and correction of all employees is left to the discretion of the ADON, and DON.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The qualified candidate must be a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse who has supervisory experience as well as Long-term care experience in a skilled care setting. He/She must also be able to perform the above listed requirements representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to perform the job adequately. Have knowledge of QA audits and labs. Be able to supervise staff. Candidate must also have received appropriate AAOD education to perform data entry, maintenance, and staff education as approved by RNAC and Information Systems Director.

 

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and completion of an approved RN nursing program. Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long term care.

 

COMPUTER SKILLS

Enter, adjust and retrieve data using a microcomputer or personal computer and keyboard.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of residents, visitors, or employees of organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Must posses the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse in Maryland.

  4. Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g. sever weather, evacuation, post disaster, etc.)
  5. Is subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  6. Is subject to exposure to infectious waste diseases, conditions, etc. including TB, and the HIV and Hepatitis B viruses.
