Job Summary:

Responsible for the direct supervision of a group of 6–11-year-old children in a summer day camp program. Under the direction of the Camp Director, supervises assigned camp participants and aids with the planning, organizing, implementing, leading, and monitoring of Summer Camp activities to supply quality recreational camp experiences for the children enrolled.


The Recreation Leader I will be assigned a variable schedule that will typically require 4-6 hours per day between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday – Friday, but schedules and hours will vary based on camp enrollment. Position will start on June 1, 2025, and end August 15, 2025. All Camp staff must be available to start work on the first day of camp (June 16, 2025) and have obtained a Pediatric CPR/First Aid Certificate & Negative TB Test before starting camp.  If CPR/First Certificate is not already acquired at time of hire, the District will schedule a date prior to the start of camp to certify the employee. 

 

Applications will be accepted starting February 1, 2025. All applicants must be available to take part in an in-person or Zoom interview at some point between March – May 2025. 

  

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains a sincere interest in providing each child with a positive summer camp experience.
  • Aids with the planning, organizing, implementing, leading, and monitoring of Summer Camp activities.
  • Prepares, leads, and takes part in recreational activities, both active and passive, for school-age children such as games, sports, arts and crafts, field trips, and songs at an assigned day camp location.
  • Supervises and accounts for assigned participants at the day camp location and on field trips; ensures sign in and out procedures are followed.
  • Demonstrates a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic attitude with the children, parents, and camp personnel in day-to-day activities.
  • Acts as a liaison between the parents, children, camp staff and Recreation Coordinator.
  • Attends all preseason and ongoing staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Aids in keeping the camp site neat and clean and all equipment and supplies in good order.
  • Follows District policies and procedures.
  • Follow safety procedures and supplies first aid as needed; responds to emergency situations as they arise and follows emergency procedures; aids Camp Director to ensure that accidents and incidents are promptly documented and reported.
  • Actively encourage and live the district’s mission.
  • Performs other duties as needed.

Knowledge, Skill, and Experience:

  1. Minimum Education needed: High School Diploma or GED preferred. High School Students age 16 at time of hire are also encouraged to apply.
  2. Minimum Experience needed: Experience in a children’s day care program or recreational day camp program or equivalent experience in a leadership and program planning role preferred. Experience working with school-age children and a demonstrated commitment to bettering the lives of youth needed.
  3. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities needed: Knowledge of recreational activities appropriate for school age children. Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, children, parents, and volunteers. Leadership and organizational skills. Ability to use independent judgment and take proper action to ensure the safety of children and staff. Ability to deal with emergencies and stressful situations.
  4. Other requirements:
    1. Pediatric CPR/First Aid certification before the start of Summer Camp.
    2. All applicants must be fingerprinted and pass a pre-employment background check.
    3. TB Test must be completed prior to the start of camp, proof of negative test required.
    4. Reliable transportation to and from work.
    5. If under the age of 18 and still enrolled in high school, a work permit is required to be issued prior to start date.

Physical Job Description:


    Typical Working Conditions: Indoor and outdoor recreational facilities; frequent public contact; exposure to sun, heat, and inclement weather; frequent travel for field trips. Schedule may vary.


    Equipment Used: Telephone, equipment cart, arts and crafts supplies, and sports equipment.


    Essential Physical Tasks: Frequently takes part in strenuous physical activities, such as hiking, sports and other related camp activities, in outdoor and indoor locations. Frequent monitoring of children requires detecting and responding to emergencies and supplying CPR or First Aid as needed. Must lift or carry lunchbox containers. Must push or pull the equipment cart.

     

    Physical Demands: Frequently needed to lift or carry up to 10 pounds. Occasionally required to lift or carry up to 30 pounds. Frequently required to push or pull up to 30 pounds. Frequently required to walk, run, stand for extended periods of time, reach, kneel, squat, sit, and bend while watching children and taking part in camp activities. Hearing and speech adequate to communicate in person and over the phone. Vision adequate to watch children and read fine print. Manual dexterity to grasp and hold objects, use fine manipulation, write, and use telephone.

    Initial Selection Review:

    The Fair Oaks Recreation & Park District reviews all first application materials to find qualified applicants. Applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be invited to the first phase of the recruitment process. If the number of applicants is high, the review process may include a secondary screening (by a panel of job knowledge experts) of the applications and/or supplemental questionnaires in which the better qualified applicants are referred to the next phase of the recruitment process.
