Fairbanks HopeLink Warming Center is a vital community resource committed to providing warmth, connection, and support to individuals experiencing homelessness in Fairbanks, Alaska. As a beacon of hope during the cold Alaskan nights, our center operates from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, seven nights a week.
Hours:
We are looking for someone to join our team on a part-time basis, working shorter shifts (5-6 hours per night), allowing for the flexibility to cover full shifts when needed. This position can expect to work between 25 - 35 overnight hours per week. The center is open from October until the end of April and staff are provided a bonus of an additional $1 for every hour worked, if they finish the season.
Job Overview:
Fairbanks Hopelink is seeking an empathetic and supportive individual to join our team as a Peer Support Staff. In this role, you will play a crucial part in creating a welcoming and understanding atmosphere for our guests, offering assistance, encouragement, and a listening ear to those navigating homelessness. Paid training will be provided.
Responsibilities:
Operations:
- Open and close the warming center every evening/morning.
- Tidy and organize the space at closing time (mornings).
Peer Support:
- Maintain a safe atmosphere for guests and staff.
- Engage with guests on a peer-to-peer basis, offering empathy and understanding.
- Provide emotional support and encouragement to individuals experiencing homelessness.
Guest Advocacy:
- Advocate for the needs and rights of guests.
- Collaborate with the Board to address individual guest concerns and challenges.
- Assist guests in accessing additional support services and resources, when requested.
Community Resources:
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local resources and services available to individuals experiencing homelessness.
- Provide information to guests about community programs, job opportunities, and healthcare services, when requested.
- Collaborate with local agencies to enhance the support network for guests when possible.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of interactions and support provided to guests.
- Assist in collecting data for program evaluation and improvement.
- Collaborate with the Manager to ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
Qualifications:
- Lived experience with homelessness or a related background.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Compassionate and non-judgmental approach to supporting individuals in crisis.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Understanding of trauma-informed care principles.
- Willingness to engage in ongoing training and professional development.
