Provide for the safety of spectators, participants, and staff involved in aquatic activities and present aquatic instructional programs.

REPORTS TO: Facilities Supervisor
POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None
1. Perform lifeguard duties, enforce facility rules, regulations and policies, supervise and respond directly to all manner of emergency situations.2. Assist in the recruitment of subordinates, provide onsite technical direction of work to lower level positions.
3. Provide routine clean up, sanitation, and general maintenance in the facility.
4. Perform State of Alaska required pool water testing; Calculate, mix and add chemicals while wearing required safety gear.
5. Responsible for opening/closing facility as required.
6. Complete daily attendance and revenue reports as required; balance change fund and reconcile with deposits at the end of shift.
7. Assist in planning and implementing special events and programs.
8. Handle cash, make change, and operate a credit card machine.
9. Answer phones and customer questions about programs.
10. Prepare daily and monthly lesson plans for all learn to swim classes.
11. Serve as point of contact for swim lesson questions, evaluate and recommend swim levels to new students and resolve customer concerns regarding swim lessons.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Eighteen (18) years of age at time of employment.
2. Must possess and maintain certification in Water Safety Instructor, Standard First Aid, Lifeguarding/Water Park Training, CPR-PR, and AED as recognized by the American Red Cross (or equivalent). (ORIGINAL CERTIFICATIONS MUST BE PROVIDED AT THE TIME OF INTERVIEW)
3. A minimum of 12 months of experience in a formal aquatic instruction environment.
4. Demonstrated understanding of pool chemical requirements or 3 months of experience in testing and maintaining chemical balance.
5. Must have and be able to maintain a valid driver’s license. Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough's insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of automobile insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUIRED UPON REQUEST)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Knowledge of basic pool operations, water testing and chemical adjustment.
2. Ability to use small hand/power tools for routine and preventative maintenance.
3. Ability to maintain frequent courteous and tactful public interactions.
4. Knowledge of State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation health code regulations.
5. Knowledge of basic computer skills to include Word, Excel, email and other MS Office programs.
6. Ability to operate a point of sale computer system.
7. Ability to wear a respirator and pass a physical.
OTHER
1. This position requires a criminal background investigation and fingerprinting.

JOB RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervisor responsibilities; directs work flow of permanent/ temporary/ seasonal/ volunteers; performs mostly routine duties with a few minor problems that must be resolved on own initiative with little immediate supervision; the consequences of error, carelessness or mistaken judgment require serious effort to recover or may not be recoverable.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
A recreation facility where conditions are pleasant; somewhat disagreeable conditions with occasional heat and humidity; minor accident probability; requires short periods of heavy lifting, pushing or pulling (50 lbs.). Must be able to spend extended time periods in pool.
This position falls under the Borough’s Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
Salary : $24
