Basic Function
Assist the public at the Circulation desk. Perform various activities in support of library materials circulation.

REPORTS TO: Library Associate, Circulation
POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None
SHIFT: Monday-Friday 9am-3pm, 30hrs/week
Typical Duties
1. Register patrons for library cards and enter/maintain FNSB patron data and Alaska Library Catalog (ALC) consortium wide data in computerized database; maintain backup patron files.
2. Answer questions and resolve patrons' problems/complaints concerning FNSB and ALC-wide overdues, cards, and materials.
3. Contact other ALC libraries to coordinate activities and procedures. Relay other ALC library fee policies to FNSB patrons.
4. Receive and record payments for various library transactions. Balance and reconcile payments daily.
5. Compile information for statistical reporting. Manage lost and found.
6. Place reserves on requested materials, maintain the hold database, and notify patrons when materials are available. Run, sort, and prioritize holds.
7. Schedule check-in and check-out of equipment and meeting rooms, auditorium, and conference rooms. Ensure use of equipment and rooms are in compliance with library standards and effectively handle any issues.
8. Assist patrons in use of typewriters, copiers, centralized printing systems, and other in house equipment.
9. Ensure that library materials are checked out/in and shelved accurately and in a timely fashion. Review damaged items and make minor repairs to books and media; send to Collection Services for further repair if needed.
10. Process lost and paids, damages, and claims returns; prepare refund requests and handle other patron related billing processes.
11. Participate in opening and closing procedures. Monitor library and report any safety incidents and problems immediately.
Position Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Two (2) years of work experience with the public of which one (1) year must have been in a library. One (1) year beyond the page level preferred. Associates Degree in Library Science can substitute for this experience requirement.
3. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer for a variety of computer programs (MS Word, Outlook & Excel required; database preferred) and type at a proficient level. Ability to operate a variety of office machines (copier, scanner, fax, multi-function phone, printers etc.) Knowledge of computerized library system preferred.
4. Experience with cash handling.
5. PREFERRED: Ability to have and maintain a valid driver's license and to meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough's insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUIRED UPON REQUEST)

2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and courteously under stressful situations with the general public, other organizations/agencies, and other staff members.

1. A SKILLS TEST MAY BE ADMINISTERED.
2. This position requires a criminal background check.

JOB RESPONSIBILITY:
Does not supervise; many minor problems daily and occasional major one with supervisor usually required for help and instruction; the consequences of error, carelessness or mistaken judgment require minimal effort to recover.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
General office where conditions are pleasant; good, clean conditions where accidents/hazards are negligible; requires short periods of moderate lifting, pushing or pulling (26-50 lbs.).
