What are the responsibilities and job description for the Road Worker position at Fairfield County Ohio?
The work of this class primarily involves the operation of a variety of light, medium, and heavy road maintenance equipment, as well as performing physical maintenance and repair of county roads and bridges using a variety of hand tools.
Licensed vehicle operation in this class is governed by classification and endorsements validated by an Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Employees in this class may operate any licensed vehicle the individual employee is authorized to operate under state and federal CDL guidelines.
Unlicensed equipment operation in this class includes all equipment except dozer, crane, rubber-tired excavator, and track hoe.
Employees in this class receive general direction and supervision from either the Road and Bridge Maintenance Supervisor, or other employee in charge.
Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of assigned equipment as well as the physical repair and maintenance of road surfaces, berms, culverts, ditches, fences, bridge structures, guardrail, the control of roadside vegetation and the removal of snow and ice from road surfaces.
Employees in this class are required to pay attention to private property and surface and subsurface utility lines.

Using a variety of equipment, haul fill dirt, salt, asphalt, stone materials, supplies, and other personnel to and from work sites, grade and slope berms, clean ditches, dig ditches for installation of pipe and tile, install or removes pipe and other construction materials, load trucks with road materials such as stone or salt, remove bridge structures, load and unload construction materials and road surface materials; roll asphalt; transport equipment.
When not engaged in the operation of motorized equipment is required to:
Operate miscellaneous equipment to remove paint and/or corrosion from bridge structures, apply primers and paint to bridges and other structures as necessary to protect against corrosion
Repair road surfaces by applying various blacktop compounds, tar, stone, using a rake, shovel, or other handheld tools
Construct and repair guardrail, build forms for the repair or installation of concrete abutments, culverts and ditches
Erect and repair fencing, dig post holes, erect road signs
Clean roadside brush and trees to maintain roadway appearance, including litter pickup
Cut roadside brush and trees to maintain roadway appearance, including liter pickup
Repair or assist in replacement of bridge structure
Establish appropriate work zone signing
Flag traffic in or around a job site
Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment
May be required to estimate quantities of materials needed to complete an assigned project
May be placed in charge of a work effort
May assist in the light maintenance and repair of vehicles
Provide written reports, as needed
Employees in this class may be assigned to operate road maintenance equipment the individual is not proficient with, including all heavy equipment, under direct supervision of the Road or Bridge Maintenance Supervisor
Perform other related duties as required
Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform the work of this class.
Education: High School graduate or GED; completion of certified training in the use and operation of road construction equipment
Experience: Two years of experience in the operation of light to medium road maintenance equipment
Licensing: Class B Ohio Commercial Drivers License with tanker endorsement
