TITLE: Head Varsity Coach
QUALIFICATIONS: At least 5 years of coaching experience at the high school level.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent, Principal, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director
JOB GOAL:
Athletics play an important role in the overall operation of the school. This role ranges from serving as a focal point for community pride to demonstrating the instructional value afforded to students (i.e., goal setting, learning the importance of hard work, commitment to a group, building self-esteem, etc.).
In setting expectations for coaches, the issue of wins and losses inevitably enters the equation. The belief of the Fairfield Union Schools is that several factors define the success of a coach and his/her program. These factors are presented as major categories in the job description. Winning is important to the overall success of the program; however, the importance of wins and losses will always be secondary to providing strong leadership and cultivating a culture of high character student-athletes.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. PROGRAM COORDINATION AND MANAGEMENT
- Develops a vision and mission for the short-term and long-term goals of the program. Upon request, the head coach should be able to communicate these goals with all stakeholders.
- The head coach is responsible for establishing rules that govern the functionality of the program and reflect the belief system of the District.
- Coordinates the assignment and supervision of all coaches assigned to the sport.
- Coordinates the scheduling of all activities related to the sport with the Athletic Director.
- Communicates the scheduling of all activities related to the sport with the Athletic Director.
- Recommends a budget for the sport in writing to the Athletic Director.
- Insures that all athletes participating has completed all necessary forms and requirements such as insurance coverage, physical card, etc.
- Conducts sport in compliance with all rules and regulations of the Fairfield Union Board of Education, the Athletic Department, our athletic league and the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
- Submits the names of eligible players to the Athletic Director in a timely manner.
- Coordinates the supervision of locker rooms, playing facilities, buildings, or other contest sites.
- Communicates with the Athletic Director regarding transportation arrangements.
- Cooperates with scheduling of facilities for all levels of the program with the Athletic Director.
- Attends Rules and Interpretations Meetings as required by the OHSAA.
- Assists the Athletic Director in selecting candidates for assistant coaches within the sport.
- Attends appropriate clinics and workshops to keep abreast of developments in the sport.
- Promotes continued skill development and professional growth of assistant coaches.
- Completes other assignments or duties as assigned by the school administration.
B. MOTIVATION, LEADERSHIP AND COANCHING OF STUDENT ATHLETES
- Recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of the athletes involved and adjusts coaching to reflect these characteristics.
- Serves as a positive, effective role model for students in the program, as well as other students and demonstrates a caring attitude to students.
- Uses various strategies for encouraging student interest in the program.
- Establishes multiple strategies/activities to promote the interest and enthusiasm of the athletes in the program.
- Has concern for the health, safety and welfare of student athletes.
- Assumes responsibility for the appropriate treatment of athletic injuries, in cooperation with the athlete and his/her family.
- Develops and distributes training rules for the sport; secures student signatures, acknowledging receipt of the training rules.
- Promotes communication and understanding between the athletes and cheerleaders.
- Develops awards for the sport that will encourage individual and team performance.
- Organizes and coordinates all preseason conditioning programs in compliance with OHSAA guidelines.
- Demonstrates a desire to learn and grow.
- Develops short- and long-term goals with the athlete.
C. PROMOTING THE PROGRAM
- Establishes several strategies/activities to promote positive parent relations.
- Establish several strategies/activities in the community to positively promote the program.
- Conveys a sense of enthusiasm and interest in students and the program.
- Notifies local news media as to game or contest results.
- Will utilize social media to promote activities within the program.
- Develops and installs a complete award system as per the individual sport.
- Works to support the program through fundraising efforts.
D. COMMUNICATION WITH THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
- Regularly communicates plans, developments and problems of the sport to the Athletic Director.
- Develops long-range goals for their sport in cooperation with the Athletic Director.
- Submits all requests to the Board of Education through the Athletic Director.
- Notifies the Athletic Director of awards needed at least three weeks prior to the close of the season.
- Provides leadership in consultation with the Athletic Director in all phases of the planning for the sport.
- Processes all purchases through the Athletic Director’s office according to purchasing procedures.
- Coordinates all fundraisers through the Athletic Director.
- Coordinates all extended trips through the Athletic Director.
- Provides the Athletic Director with a complete annual inventory.
- Completes a season ending evaluation with the Athletic Director.
