M Health Fairview is seeking a Communication Access Coordinator to provide consultation and establish communication access tools for all collaborators involved in the healthcare encounter. This will be for any person needing communication access that falls under the Persons with Communications Disabilities Policy held by Fairview Health Services. The Coordinator will be a meaningful part of hospital accessibility and provide valuable feedback and consultation to frontline staff, regulatory staff, and the community who need to access care. This a casual position with flexible hours!
In the scope of the Deaf Interpreter, they will provide communication access by using formative linguistic, cultural, and life experiences. The role will enable multifaceted comprehension and interaction in a wide range of visual, language, and communication forms. This role will also perform as a Deaf Interpreter and will support effective and positive communication via in-person or virtual platforms!
Responsibilities Job Description
Job Expectations:
- Explain their role responsive to the situation's demands.
- Has proven understanding of basic healthcare terminology and physical anatomy.
- Ability to interpret complex healthcare concepts into ASL or other form of visual communication appropriate to the communication needs of the user
- Manage in-person or virtual encounters promoting communicative autonomy
- Facilitate communication across cultural differences and alerts all parties to significant cultural or linguistic disparities that may significantly impact outcomes
- Complete all Educational Annual requirements Adheres to RID Code of Professional Conduct.
- Has firm understanding of HIPAA as it applies to the healthcare interpreter
- Adopts understanding from the Healthcare Interpreter Code of Ethics
- Practice timely communication with scheduling office and administrative team
- Manage daily workflow in Epic, Microsoft Outlook, and Teams
- Adapt to fast-paced technology changes within the working environment
Adaptability:
- Travels to and provides services in multiple settings as needed/requested
- Provides services in modalities including in-person and/or virtual interpreting
- Demonstrates personal flexibility to meet staffing and patient communication needs
- Manages and communicates unanticipated changes throughout the day
- Demonstrates ability to provide language services across a variety of clinical disciplines

Qualifications
Required
Education
- Minimum of 40-hours formal training (CEUs RID approved sponsor) – Documented
- 8 hours NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct
- 8 Hours Intro to Interpreting
- 8 hours process of Interpretation
- 16 hours - electives of your choice
- 8 hours NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in healthcare interpreting
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in general practice interpreting
- Understanding of Assistive Devices and other Communication Access needs, not limited to Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing individuals
License/Certification/Registration
- If certification status is incomplete (Certified Deaf Interpreter), requirement will be fulfilled within 1 year upon hire
Preferred
Education
- Bachelor Degree or higher in interpreting or related fields.
Experience
- 5 years of experience in healthcare interpreting
- 5 years of experience in general interpreting
- Experience working in a role that assessed access needs
License/Certification/Registration
- Certified Deaf Interpreter
