What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nurse Practitioner - Hospitalist position at Fairview Health Services?
Fairview Health services seeks a board-certified Nurse Practitioner to join their Hospitalist team at M Health Fairview St. John's Hospital in Maplewood, MN. The main emphasis is to provide care and services to patients in the Short Stay/Observation Unit.
This unit is a brand new 16-bed unit that is located in the hospital and is designed to streamline patient throughput by moving patients presenting with more complex conditions into an area better suited for their treatment. The setting is geared toward patients who require more management or attention than can be given in the emergency department, but do not need the length or level of services provided in the inpatient setting. The goal of the Observation Unit is to avoid unnecessary and costly inpatient admissions by aggressively diagnosing and treating patients' symptoms, allowing them to go home in a timely manner.
In this role, the NP:
- Works as a 1.0 FTE
- Shifts are 6a-4p and noon-10p
- Delivers health care services to the Observation Unit patients under the supervision of the collaborating physician(s).
- Obtains health history and performs assessment accurately.
- Assesses, diagnoses, treats and monitors acute and chronic health problems of the patients as defined by established guidelines and protocols.
- Orders and interprets diagnostic tests.
- Prescribes medications and/or recommends over-the-counter medications as appropriate.
- Promotes positive health behaviors and instructs clients in self-care skills.
- Communicates with the collaborating physician in a timely manner and refers all clients to the collaborating physician as appropriate.
- Coordinate discharge for patients to outpatient facilities, consultations, and follow up appointments; writes prescriptions; and provides patient education.
- Depending on census workload on the observation unit this position could also help with regular inpatient admissions, lab follow ups, and list making

Qualifications:
- Graduate of a school or nursing and accredited Adult/Gero, Acute Care, or Family Nurse Practitioner training program
- BC/BE through the AANP or ANCC
- Licensed or ability to obtain APRN license with the Minnesota Board of Nursing
- Ability to obtain and /or maintain DEA certification for the State of Minnesota
- Meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges
- Inpatient experience preferred
