The Supervisor of the Clinical Informatics Learning & Development team has strategic and daily oversight of Learning & Development staff that support EHR/HIT Instructional Designers and Learning Specialists through the effective application, design and delivery of learning experiences to meet the system’s health care mission and vision. This leader applies learning & development knowledge and processes to assure best practice educational content is embedded into all learning experiences. This role will develop and mature the Learning & Development functions to achieve optimal business value and exceed customer service expectations while aligning with corporate goals.
The Supervisor of Learning & Development is an expert in the use of health information technology (HIT) applied to clinical care and health care business operations. They are responsible for the design and development of electronic health record (EHR) and health information technology (HIT) content for mission critical learning programs, including (but not limited to) web-based learning, instructor-led training, blended instruction solutions, and virtual instructor-led sessions. This role develops learning using programs like Snag-it, Camtasia, Ancile uPerform, and Microsoft Office 365 while integrating deliverables such as technical product videos and online learning modules into learning management systems across multiple delivery platforms. The Supervisor is an expert in Instructional Design and Training best practices, is a thought leader in the design, development, application, training delivery and innovation of design practices, and role models innovation. This role mentors Instructional Designers and Trainers and has proficient knowledge of complex clinical and business organizational workflows. The Supervisor is responsible for all elements of the vendor required Principal Trainer certification if an assigned application, including Epic training environment build, upgrade education, and Epic course curriculum.
The Supervisor uses their expert level knowledge to provide direction, support, and expertise to the staff in the department. They complete leader-delegated work independently using critical thinking, data, pertinent information sources, and best practices. This role identifies enhancements to course design and keeps current on the latest industry use of existing technologies to improve productivity, performance, and learner experience, in order to guide and support staff in these practices.
- Uses informatics concepts, methods, and tools to promote safe, effective, and optimal use of technologies and are focused on the interaction of people, processes and technology for the complete and accurate delivery of information needed for efficient, high quality and safe patient care.
- Collaborates with informatics, IT, and operational colleagues to assess, plan, and evaluate changes to systems and identify the impact to clinical workflows to plan for associated learning needs. Independently develops, plans, estimates, and analyzes the impact of viable learning solution options to address business needs. Applies expert understanding of clinical workflow and health care operations to identify and develop integrated learning solutions. Uses expert multi-media development skills to create curricula for all forms of consumption (virtual, in person, self-paced, micro, video, etc.) using creative, innovative, and evidence-based approaches.
- Anticipates the need for and independently documents complex business requirements and creates matrixed processes/workflows crossing multiple operational areas. Translates these into tangible learning outcomes and appropriate learning collateral.
- Adept in PDSA methods and change management, serving as change practitioners themselves. Defines SMART goals, evaluates them, and takes action to meet or exceed intended results. Manage staff through all phases of learning projects including analysis, design, development, change management, communication, implementation, & evaluation.
- Design and develop training content that engages learners and aligns with identified outcomes and adult learning principles. Defines and maintains course design guide. Leads review of evaluative data regarding training content and modifies content as appropriate. Audits content and course design to identify internal best practices and areas for improvement.
- Collaborate across clinical informatics teams, analytics, information technology, practice and education, and operational teams to meet goals and deliver training content.
- Mentors and role models knowledge of human-computer interaction, usability heuristics, and adult learning principles to the design and creation of learning collateral.
- Acquire and maintain knowledge of EHR and HIT use across multiple service lines, domains, care settings, and Epic modules and environments.
- Lead the ID maintenance and build schedule for the Epic training/practice environments and learning home dashboard including build of patient profiles and histories appropriate to the audience, clinical workflow, and learning requirements in the training/practice environments.
- Assign and monitor daily priorities. Provide guidance, instruction, direction, and leadership to a group of individuals within the team for the purpose of achieving key results and group goals. Address resource constraints with other leads and leaders. Support defined operational and IT processes in daily prioritization, decision making, delegation, and change management; Monitor incident ticket queue and generates reports as needed; Serve as a point person for daily escalations from operations and IT.
- Regularly deliver clear, constructive, and timely feedback to team members to enhance their performance, support their professional development, and drive continuous improvement within the team.
- Ability to travel to/from M Health Fairview locations for site visits, rounding, and other activities related to the role. Responsible for working on-call shifts as scheduled
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in health care or related field from an accredited program, informatics degree from an accredited institution or combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of 7 years clinical healthcare experience and/or 7 years informatics-related experience working in a health system directly with end users
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in training/education, instructional design, or virtual instructional design
- A minimum of 2 years demonstrated experience leading, mentoring and coaching staff.
- Expert understanding of clinical care workflows, health care operations, and have a working knowledge of computer systems lifecycle management
- Demonstrates accountability for tasks, delegates and/or independently completes complex work assignments on time; multitasks and prioritizes to maximize efficiency.
- Demonstrated ability to think abstractly and anticipate needs beyond basic requirements
- Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication, analytical and presentation skills
- Available to work scheduled on call rotations.
- Access to reliable transportation.
Maintain current Epic certifications per vendor requirements and/or commitment to obtaining Epic certification within 6 months of employment.
Preferred
- Masters or Doctoral level degree in instructional design, informatics, or operational leadership
- Epic EHR use, implementations, upgrades, and/or build
- Industry-level certifications such as AACN, HIMSS, Lean, Master Instructional Designer, Master Trainer, Virtual Training Design, Virtual Training Certificate, etc.
