The Outpatient Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) Supervisors oversees the OP CDI program, identifying areas of focus for improvement opportunities through report analysis interpretation of process and operational reports, financial and compliance reports, and quality rating reports. The Outpatient (OP) CDI Supervisor demonstrates a high level of clinical expertise, leadership, and creative approaches to management of complex OP CDI program tasks. The candidate will provide supervision for the assigned OP CDI Specialists at the direction of the CDI Manager which may include oversight for: staffing, assigning the OP CDI Specialist daily workload, and attending facility assigned meetings, in lieu of the CDI Manager. The supervisor maintains a comprehensive knowledge of the EHR and departmental solutions, as well as outpatient and CDI coding practices.
The OP CDI Supervisor will assist with various associated operational matters including appropriate scheduling and coverage of reviews, query development, educating OP CDI Specialists, monitoring the program, and refining the process as needed to clarify documentation during patient’s visits. The OP CDI Supervisor coordinates follow-up on unanswered queries, works collaboratively with appropriate stakeholders to facilitate documentation education with Physicians, Advanced Practicing Providers and other healthcare professionals, utilizing appropriate querying tools to capture needed documentation. This role will ensure operational goals and objectives are met under the direction of the CDI Manager.
This position will support the organization by analyzing documentation trends and creating plans for consistent improvement on key performance metrics to ensure optimizing the risk adjustment factor (RAF) score by documenting and reporting appropriate hierarchical condition categories (HCC) in the outpatient settings. The OP CDI Supervisor works with information technology and clinical operations to improve documentation templates and alerts by disease type to support real time provider documentation to improve accuracy, specificity and help eliminate manual intervention. This supervisor maintains a comprehensive knowledge of the EHR and outpatient coding practices including acuity coding.
Documentation is crucial to patient safety, optimal patient outcomes and success in research studies. Provider documentation, related diagnoses, and procedure documentation is integral to accurate coding.
- Selects, hires, orients and trains qualified employees to perform Outpatient CDI Specialist job role. Reviews and approves Mytime and monitors absenteeism and tardiness.
- Serves as a resource and point person for the OP CDI team. Answers questions related to ICD-10 and CPT code assignments. Problem solves complex cases and intervenes to resolve coder/OP CDI Specialist disagreements related to coded bills.
- Ensures OP CDI team coverage and re-assigns staff to work alternate payers, providers, clinics, etc. as needed. Monitors productivity of the team as a whole and individually.
- Maintains and provides oversight to the OP CDI workflow by ensuring that data entry is completed accurately and thoroughly. Prepares reports as needed. Identifies trends, variances, and opportunities to improve the documentation review process.
- Understands team requirements and leads team to achieve performance outcomes ensuring team members industry knowledge is kept current creating fully functional team performance.
- Ensures self and team remain current with regulatory and payer requirements and implement people, process and technology changes needed to maintain and ensure compliance.
- Coordinates, prioritizes and documents OP CDI educational workflows to ensure the greatest specificity, continuous efficiency, and process improvement.
Required
- Associate degree in Nursing, HIM, Health Care Administration, or related area
- At least Two (2) years acute nursing experience as an RN or three (3) years coding experience required.
- Minimum One (1) year as an Outpatient CDI or Acuity related experience or three (3) years as an Inpatient CDI Specialist
- Demonstrated extensive critical-thinking skills, and understanding of disease processes, anatomy, pathophysiology, and disease management/treatment required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current coding guidelines and methodologies: HCCs, ICD-10-CM coding guidelines, clinics, and conventions required.
- One of the following: Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist - Professional (CCS-P), Certified Professional Coder - Hospital (CPC-H), Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist-Outpatient (CCDS-O), Certified Risk Adjustment Coder (CRC)
Preferred
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing for candidates with nursing experience or Health Information Management (HIM) degree or related field or equivalent experience.
- Five (5) years of acute care nursing or five (5) years coding experience
- Minimum three (3) years Outpatient Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) Specialist or Acuity experience or five (5) years as an Inpatient CDI Specialist and completion of the ACDIS Outpatient Apprenticeship
