Apprentice Lineman:


BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS:


EDUCATION:


High School Diploma or equivalent education. Will have completed course work from an accredited lineman training school.


EXPERIENCE:
Will preferably have experience with construction, fieldwork, heavy equipment, and safety training.


PHYSICAL DAMANDS:

Sit, stand, walk, grasp, reach outward and overhead, kneel, squat and bend. Ability to safely ascend and descend stairways and cat walks, and equipment. Lift/carry 50 – 75 lbs. Push/pull 25 -50 lbs. Ability to work in extreme heat or cold and in confided spaces. Ability to differentiate colors and utilize senses. Visual acuity and manual dexterity in using precision and non-precision hand tools, power tools, and technical devices; ability to use all required safety equipment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position when possible.

A valid motor vehicle CDL operator’s license is required.


The Apprentice Lineman shall be expected to perform any of the duties of a Groundman and, in addition, should be able to:


  • Climb poles and work out of bucket when required
  • Frame erected poles and attach guys to poles.
  • Hang transformers, reclosers, and other equipment on cold poles only.
  • Make connections of meter loops, transformers, and other equipment on cold poles.
  • Build meter loops.
  • String and tie-in conductor on poles and lay cable.
  • Make splices on underground cable and overhead and underground transformer connections on de-energized systems only. Under the supervision of a Foreman or First Class Lineman.
  • Be expected to go on trouble calls when called by a Journeyman.
  • Learn to operate and maintain all equipment.
  • Uses each piece of equipment in such a manner so as to promote the maximum serviceability and the safe useful life from each unit.

Safety Practices and Training


  • Training shall include more advanced first aid work, including pole-top rescue. The Apprentice should also receive instruction and practice in the use of hot line tools, ground chains, rubber protective equipment, and other grounding devices and practices.
  • When not serving otherwise or specifically assigned, will act as a safety observer.

Electrical Theory


1- The apprentice Lineman should receive instruction in basic electrical theory, including circuits and grounding connections.


Records, Reports, and Related Information


1- The Apprentice Lineman shall learn to read staking sheets to determine types of construction and needed materials. The Apprentice Lineman will also study the Rural Electrification Administration specifications and drawing booklet. He/She should know how to read all kinds of current and potential meters as used by the Cooperative.


Supervision, Training Period and Progression


  • The Apprentice Lineman I is under the direct supervision of the Foreman of the crew to which he/she is assigned. The Foreman is responsible for his training activities. He/She usually will remain in the Apprentice Lineman I classification for a period of twelve months. At the end of that time a recommendation will be made by the committee whether he/she should be advanced to the next training step Apprentice Lineman II. If he/she cannot be advanced and there are indications that further training as an Apprentice Lineman I will lead to advancement, he/she may be continued in that position for an additional period of not to Exceed six months. At the end that time, a final determination must be made. If he/she cannot now be advanced, he/she may be given the opportunity to qualify for a lower rated position or for another position if vacancies exist. If he/she cannot be advanced or moved to another position employment will be terminated.
