FOOD SERVICE ASSISTANT I
Position Description
BASIC FUNCTION:
Entry-level position; Under immediate supervision, assists in the preparation and/or serving of food in a cafeteria, maintains food service areas, facilities and equipment in a clean and sanitary condition and performs related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Positions in this class may be assigned to a food preparation kitchen, snack bar or faculty dining area where they have the responsibility to assist in food preparation, serve food and clean kitchen and serving areas. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively, but no one position will necessarily include all these duties.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS – Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assists in the preparation, packaging and serving of food.
- Washes dishes and kitchen equipment.
- Assists in requisitioning, receiving and storage of foods and supplies.
- Assists in maintaining proper care of equipment and sanitation of the kitchen.
- May act as cashier, collecting money, making change and counting totals.
- Participates in District in-service programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of: Basic methods and materials used in “fast food” preparation, serving and transporting of food as well as food preparation methods such as washing, cutting, assembling and wrapping foods or ingredients. Basic food serving utensils and equipment, basic sanitation and safety procedures related to the preparation and serving of food. Basic written and oral English and simple math is desirable.
Ability to: Lift and transport quantities of food or ingredients, stand for sustained periods of time and work efficiently during rush conditions. Count, add, subtract and tally series of numbers, keep simple records and make change quickly and accurately. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities. Some paid or volunteer experience in the serving and preparation of foods is desirable. Demonstrate dependability and cleanliness, good health and willingness to work. Free from communicable disease.
LICENSE:
A food handler’s certificate issued by the County Health Department to be obtained at time of appointment.
WORKING CONDITIONS: School/Office environment
Supervisor: Food Services Director
Work Year: 9.5 Months per year
Salary: Grade 6
Overtime Status: Non-Exempt
