The Program Director will oversee and lead Families for a Livable Climate’s education, community-building, and programmatic efforts, including community outreach events, educational workshops, special projects, and volunteer engagement. This position involves strategic oversight, program development, partnership management, and team leadership. The Program Director will work closely with staff, volunteers, and partners to further FLC’s mission, accelerating efforts to engage communities in climate action. The Program Director will also support administrative tasks as needed (potentially including some fundraising support), ensuring alignment with organizational goals.


This is a part-time, hybrid position, requiring a combination of in-person and remote work. Candidates must be located within Montana. While we prefer applicants to be based near our Missoula office, we are open to considering strong candidates from other locations within Montana.


Starting rate is 20 hours per week at $24/hour, with the possibility of expanding as funding allows.

Key Responsibilities:

The Program Director’s work will fall into the following categories:

  1. Programmatic Leadership: Work closely with the Executive Director to develop, oversee, and track FLC’s core program areas, including:
  • Program Oversight: Provide high-level support for our key programs, ensuring effective delivery, goal setting, and strategic direction. Specifially: Lead our core engagement programs including Core Team and Working Groups, and other related efforts, and work closely with the Communications Director to set goals and direction for our key Communications Programs, including The Changing Times and Montana Climate Stories.
  • Core Team and Working Groups: Create and oversee the program design, goal-setting, and processes for volunteer engagement, recruitment, training, and support. Work closely with volunteers to steer and support campaign plans, action opportunities, and climate advocacy work.
  • Community Outreach, Events, and Workshops: Coordinate and lead community events and educational workshops, ensuring successful planning, promotion, and execution. Foster relationships with community partners and assist with event sponsorships and collaborations.
  • Data Management & Reporting: Track key metrics, and evaluate program progress and successes.  

2.Nonprofit Administration & Development

  • Contribute to administrative processes, ensuring smooth operations and effective program implementation, potentially including some grant writing and fundraising support.
  • Assist with budgeting, reporting, and compliance for educational and event-based programs as needed.


Additional Responsibilities:

  • Supervise interns, volunteers, and part-time staff as needed.
  • Address and resolve challenges as they arise, maintaining a collaborative and positive work environment.
  • Act as a liaison between FLC, partner organizations, and other community members and leaders.
  • Take on additional duties as required, depending on organizational needs.


Required Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in nonprofit program management, event coordination, and/or education-focused roles.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or 3-5 years of experience in related work.
  • Strong communication, public speaking, group facilitation, and organizational skills; ability to represent the organization to the public.
  • Strong leadership and relational skills; takes initiative.
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team, both in-office and remotely.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to lift and carry items as needed for event setup, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to travel for events and partnership building.

  • Creative and strategic thinking in program development and community engagement.
  • Community organizing experience, knowledge of campaigns and advocacy, and experience leading and teaching changemaking skills.
  • Outgoing, energetic, and enthusiastic about working with people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to navigate complex, ambiguous situations with humor and resilience.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, with experience working with underserved communities.
  • Familiarity with climate issues and a passion for addressing the impacts of climate change.
  • An openness to learning about and addressing institutional and structural racism in the context of climate justice.
  • Experience with grant writing, fundraising, and nonprofit development is a plus.
