DESCRIPTION
The primary responsibility of the Family Assistance Worker is to provide targeted, focused, and prescribed activities and services that build home and community living skills for children and their families. Skills include daily living skills (such as development and implementation of routines in the home), use of school and other transportation services appropriately, engagement of recreational activities to enhance socialization skills, and reduction of developmentally inappropriate behaviors.
The Family Assistance Worker promotes home and community living skills, communication, and socialization, and identifies and arranges appropriate community services. He/she develops a trusting relationship with the child and models appropriate behaviors and coping skills. The employee encourages positive choices, promotes self-esteem, supports academic achievement, and helps the child to develop problems solving skills.
Work is performed as part of a treatment team and under the close review of an administrative superior.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Work may include but is not limited to the following examples:
- Contacts family within one (1) working day of receipt of the screening form.
- Assesses the youth and family’s strengths and needs and serves as a liaison to connect to needed services.
- Links child and family to community supports and services.
- Acts as a supportive resource for the child and family.
- Provides in-home targeted, focused, and prescribed activities and services that build home and community living skills. Skills include daily living skills (e.g. development and implementation of routines in the home), use of school and other transportation services appropriately, engaging in recreational activities to enhance socialization skills, and reducing developmentally inappropriate behaviors, n building and supervision.
- Building on the child/youth’s strengths, assists him/her directly in overcoming deficits relating to the disorder and addresses identified functional problems.
- Works directly with parents and child/youth to achieve treatment plan learning objectives. Models appropriate parenting and other targeted behavior. Reinforces positive achievements.
- Assists families with children/youth that are in jeopardy of an out of the home placement; or to children/youth who have been recently discharged from a hospital/residential/out of home placement. Provides education and supervision to families to improve the structure in the home or to continue replication of structure in a residential setting.
- Provides/arranges transportation for consumers as deemed clinically and programmatically necessary to attend the program and receive needed services.
- Monitors, evaluates, and records consumer progress with respect to treatment goals; maintains timely, legible, clear, concise, and well organized records of services provided, by using collaborative documentation.
- Must be able to use the agency electronic medical record program for all documentation. Is required to use collaborative documentation.
- Must adhere to the agency service hour requirements.
- Active member of a treatment team. Makes accurate and timely reports of each consumer’s progress, barriers to progress, and the targeted learning skills.
- Completes documentation in accurate and timely manner in accordance with policies and regulatory agency requirements.
- Remains alert during working hours and complies with attendance policies.
- Maintains the confidentiality of consumer information.
- Performs other related work as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
The following education and experience qualifications are the minimum requirement used to admit or reject applicants for consideration.
- Possesses a bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, nursing or a related field. Equivalent experience in psychiatric and or substance abuse treatment may be substituted on the basis of one year of experience for each year or required educational training.
- Two (2) years of experience working with emotionally distressed, children/adolescents and abused/neglected children and families in an inpatient, outpatient, or community setting.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATION
- Possesses a valid driver’s license and is, and remains insurable, under Family Guidance Center automobile liability insurance.
