POSITION TITLE: Infection Control and Safety Manager
POSITION NO: 291
JOB SUMMARY
The Infection Control and Safety Manager coordinates, implements, and evaluates the infection control and safety program, while working as part of the Risk Management and Safety team. This role involves collaboration across departments to ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors in the areas of exposure, infectious disease, sharps injury, instrument processing/sterilization, general safety, and the environment of care.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Administers the organizations Bloodborne Pathogen Plan and policies and procedures that comply with CDC, OSHA, and accreditation agency requirements.
- Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to identify new processes and procedures which reduce or eliminate infections and educates clinical and non-clinical staff on best practices or techniques related to infection.
- Conducts ongoing review of policies, procedures, and protocols to identify infection prevention and safety discrepancies and implements revisions, as necessary.
- Performs annual infection prevention and safety risk assessments and develops annual infection prevention and safety goals based on that risk assessment.
- Develops and implements infection prevention and safety education programs which reflect current standards.
- Develops processes to ensure that personnel understand and are competent to adhere to infection prevention and safety requirements; promotes a culture of safety.
- Inspects environment and observes personnel activities for the purpose of evaluating compliance with policies and detecting possible infection prevention and safety hazards.
- Educates and guides staff on safety and emergency management procedures, and hazardous waste management.
- Monitors compliance with guidelines for decontamination and sterilization activities.
- Monitors and provides consultation for hazards including chemical and contaminated/infective material to ensure proper handling, disposal, and compliance with regulatory bodies.
- Conducts hazard/risk analyses and develops plans to mitigate illness/injury to employees and visitors.
- Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.
- Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform within scope, role specific functions.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.
Minimum Required: Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills in addition to one of the following:
- Associate degree in a technical field related to the position and three years’ experience relative to the technical function of the role, to include one year in a leadership role that demonstrates personal leadership effectiveness and team building strategies.
- High school diploma or equivalent and five years’ experience relative to the technical function of the role, to include two years in a leadership role that demonstrates personal leadership effectiveness and team-building strategies.
Preferred/Optional: Management experience in a clinical setting. Healthcare process improvement experience specifically in infection prevention. Demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of education in an adult learning healthcare setting. Proficiency in web-based research and utilizing spreadsheets, word processing and presentation creation software.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.
Minimum Required: Valid State of Wisconsin Driver’s License with an acceptable record.
Preferred/Optional: Certification in Infection Control (CIC) awarded by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation.
