SUMMARY:
The Billing Representative follows procedures to process medical bills in a timely fashion and completes any related follow up by performing the duties outlined below. Also verifies information and liaisons with insurance companies on patient claims.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform charge entry responsibilities, such as entering codes into billing system to ensure proper payment by insurance companies
- Post payments to accounts upon receipt
- Process and send claims on a weekly basis
- Manage patient accounts by merging or separating patient information
- Verify insurance and primary care physician information
- Answer patient inquiries regarding billing in a timely and professional manner
- Communicate with insurance companies to ensure timely payment of claims
- Follow procedures for collection on past due accounts
- May be asked to travel between all FHMS offices when needed
- Provide back up for other Billing Representatives as needed
- Troubleshoot basic billing and collection issues
- Review and send patient statements monthly
- May assist in other departments as needed
- Any additional duties as assigned by management
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Two to five years of medical office experience required
- Certified Medical Coding Certificate strongly preferred
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Associates degree in related field preferred
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Electronic Medical Records experience preferred
- Basic computer skills required
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Suite
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical requirements and working environment are typical of most medical office settings. Employees are frequently required to sit for long periods of time, stand, walk, balance, hear, talk, reach, and use their hands. Employees may occasionally be required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb (stepstool) and stretch. Physical effort requires some lifting usually not in excess of 15 pounds. The office work environment is indoors and free from dust, smoke, moisture, and excessive noise.
