Across these departments, the focus is on the primary prevention of disease and disability through the promotion of healthy behaviors and environments, while also addressing disparities in these outcomes. Secondary prevention, or limitation of disease progression, is also emphasized through effective screening and early intervention, and promotion of tertiary prevention, or prevention of disease sequelae, through effective treatment and rehabilitation to restore health and function. Additional research opportunities exist through the department’s inpatient service at the Jennie Sealy Hospital. In addition to our three clinics, clinical services are rendered, and potential research opportunities exist at the Gulf Health Care Center nursing home and the Galveston County Health District's Coastal Health & Wellness. Research partnerships are also available with faculty at UTMB who are doing research with the local community, with community health workers and with faith-based organizations.
