What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Family Advocate position at Family Promise of Greater Denver?
Overall Job Objective: This position is specifically designed to support families experiencing homelessness by meeting weekly and keeping them accountable as they transition back into housing through direct and supportive services.
Shelter Services
- Create mutually agreed upon service goals with 10-12 shelter families, identifying and creating tangible goals and a time tracked case plan, that each family will follow in order to secure more stable housing, income, child care, benefits and other necessary services identified by each family
- Track client progress and work directly with families to produce detailed weekly goals
- Meet with families on a weekly basis, to
- Keep families accountable to shelter guidelines; enforce guidelines through verbal and written warnings, as needed
- Complete monthly reports in a timely manner
- Enter each family served into the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) in a timely and accurate manner.
- Supervise, schedule and facilitate (as needed) Life Skills classes; refine curriculum as needed and support the volunteer teacher
- Answer phones, conduct prescreens, intake interviews, and provide coordination of the day site.
- Implement Pets with a Promise Program with leadership from Director of Programs
- Partner with other Family Advocates on shelter families’ transition plans
- Track services and case management notes in HMIS on a weekly basis Conduct One Home Assessment (formerly VISPDAT) with families in shelter program
Community Relationships
- Participate in homeless agency meetings and discussions
- Form lasting partnerships with other shelter programs and community resources to advocate for families
- Coordinate host weeks in partnership with the Shelter Manager with host congregations
- Facilitate trainings for host volunteers (as needed)
Shelter Vans
- Maintain the well-being of the Family Promise vans on a weekly basis, when operating, which can include but is not limited to (cleaning the van, gassing the van, and any other duties necessary)
General Operations
- Assist in the daily activities of Family Promise i.e. staff meetings, case conferencing meetings, family intakes, congregation visits, answering phones, and any on-call duties needed.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in human service related field preferred
- Experience in providing supportive services to those experiencing homelessness
- Knowledge of trauma-informed service provision
- Knowledge of social service, housing, childcare and employment resources
- Desired qualities: good judgment, problem solver, understands boundaries, sensitivity, cultural competence, collaboration
- Must have insured vehicle, good driving record and be willing to drive on agency business
- Proficiency in computer applications such as Word, Excel, Internet
- Schedule: Full Time Sunday – Thursday
- Reports to: Director of Programs

Pay: $50,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
